"JD's Revenge"
J.D.'s Revenge (1976) is the latest in the MGM Soul Cinema series, but is not a typical detective/mobster actioner. Rather, it is an action /horror/thriller. A quiet black law student/taxi driver in 1970's New Orleans becomes possessed by a 1940's mobster named J. D. Walker, who is
out to revenge the murder of himself and his sister. He becomes a Jekyll and Hyde personality, who beats and rapes his girlfriend, Joan Pringle, cuts several people with a razor, and finally exacts his revenge. In the process, he beds Pringle, Alice Jubert and Barbara Tasker. All three women
show breasts. There are also breasts from anonymous strippers.
The highlight of this film was the portrayal by Glynn Turman of the law student and the J.D. personality. He separated the two well enough that you never had a doubt as to which he was at any given time. A young Louis Gossitt also appeared as a preacher. Two dozen IMDB voters say 5.6 of 10. It is very apparent that the film was made pre woman's movement, and pre political correctness. Not only is there a rape scene, but after Turman hits his girlfriend for the first time, his best friend tells him that
women need, and actually like that, "You have to go into your nigger act once in a while." Most of the performances were not the greatest, and the script could have been much tighter, but it is entertaining on some levels, and has bad movie appeal. C-.

"Sister, Sister"
Sister, Sister (1988) was a freshman directing effort from Bill Condon. All the way up to the first screening, he thought he had made the picture he wanted to make when his editor Virginia Katz told him just before the screening that they had a disaster on their hands. Condon, in a very frank commentary owns up to all of his mistakes, from killing a dog (no movie where you kill a dog is ever popular) to not using a character the audience can relate to for introducing the two rather strange women at the center of this film. I suspect the original looked very good, but the DVD transfer is pathetic. It is noisy, dark in many places, and lacks contrast. Acting was fine, but the plot was too muddled to work, and then a post prod change in the ending left a moody soft focus ambience that was to foreshadow the film ending with Jennifer Jason Leigh waking up, revealing that the entire film was a dream. A test audience felt so cheated with the original ending that they nearly castrated Condon.
The film is not completely devoid of merit. Jennifer Jason Leigh and stage actress Judith Ivey did a good job with what they had to work with, and Leigh showed her breasts in several scenes, and from many different angles. Some of the scenes were very nicely lit, and the bayou scenery could have been lovely had the transfer been better. The film is a D, but the commentary is worth the rental price.

New releases Uprising
is basically a historical docudrama about the Jewish uprising in the Warsaw
Ghetto in 1943. It's not really a drama or an entertainment picture. But it is a
helluva good docudrama. Manages to be stirring by sticking quite close to the
facts, with little fictional or editorial embellishment. Includes many small and
real details from the memories of people who were there, as well as meticulous
recreations from photographs, diaries, etc.
I liked the offbeat "A
gun, a car, a blonde", but I think I was the only one. The nudity comes
from NYPD star and Headline News anchor Andrea Thompson.
