"Up in Smoke" (1978)
Up in Smoke (1978) is the first, and probably the best, Cheech and Chong movie. Chong is kicked out of his house for not getting a job, and his VW dies near the beach. After sleeping in a ditch, he starts hitching, and is picked up by Cheech. They become instant friends due to their common interests -- dope and music. They set out to "score a lid" and end up being deported to TJ (Cheech's relatives arranged the immigration raid to get free transportation to TJ for a wedding). They are offered a van to drive back across the border. Unbeknownst to them, the van is made almost entirely of pot. They pick up two hitch-hikers, and now the characters are in place and the plot set up. The boys are taken to a battle of the bands by the girls, and the LAPD narc squad is in hot pursuit of the van.
This film could never be made today, with it's excessive dope content, and decidedly un-PC gender and race jokes. It is just for this reason that I often prefer older films, and foreign films, to mainstream Hollywood MPAA castrated pabulum. Is it crude? A little. Is it funny? Absolutely. Some of
the gags require you to know a little about Southern California. For instance, the narcs have a van to use for their undercover surveillance work. It is labeled "Hollenbeck Cleaners." Hollenbeck division is the largest LPPD division, named after a former police chief. IMDB readers have it at 6.2/10, which is high for a comedy. Maltin admits to being entertained, and gives it three stars. If you already know of Cheech and Chong, I am sure you have seen it. If you aren't familiar with them, this is a good one to watch. Anne Wharton (called Ann Wharton by IMDB) does a great job of poking through a pink top, then shows her left breast from the side when she takes the top off. Watch for a small appearance by Tom Skerritt.

And now moving on to today's obscure Euro 'caps....these are scenes from Italian movie called "Giochi d'equilibrio", and directed by Amedeo Fago. One thing I've learned over the years is that many European movies are horrible about identifying the cast, and that seems to be the case today. If anyone can help, I'll be sure to put in a good for you when I see Santa.

#1 is from A5 and is my pick of the day. Why? Well, I am a Trekkie and a web geek, which basically means that I am predisposed through genetics to worship half human/half borg
blondes in skin tight uniforms. Second...this scan in particular has minor, see-thru nipple exposure! The visibility isn't great, but it is there! If you have a look and still are not convinced, try a simple adjustment with a graphics program...just reduce the brightness. That will help the skin tones under her clothing really stick out!
#2 is from NMD and isn't too shabby either.
