Fran is an obscure 1985 drama (I'm surprised it
made DVD. Not high quality though) about a mother of three who loves her
children, but is not a very good mother. Her absent husband comes home one
night and finds that she has snuck out to a bar and left the kids at home
alone. After hitting her, he leaves her for good. Unperturbed, Fran
continues to go out, fobbing her kids off on her impotent friend as she
finds a new beau Jeff, a bartender and hooks up for a few days. After
spending some time with Jeff, their relationship develops, but the two are
looking for a break from the kids, so they fob them off on Fran's sister
and go on a getaway for a few days. Four weeks later, Fran is told that
her kids are in the care of the government. Distraught, she desperately
tries to get them back.
Not an easy film to watch as the lead character
is a tough sell. Noni Hazlehurst plays her quite well but what you think
of Fran will determine whether you will like this film. By the way, I was
sympathetic to Fran to a point but from the holiday on I lost complete
patience with her.
