Jailbait! is a broad comedy produced by MTV. Every character is a caricature of a person, and the acting is way over the top. The music is MTV at it's worst. By now, you're thinking I hated this film. Quite the opposite, I was thoroughly entertained. The IMDB comments are all over the place. Nearly everyone who commented used politically correct disclaimers about the evils of underage sex, and one even went to far as to say the movie had no value. He admitted that the film "startled him into laughing out loud," but wasn't actually funny. I'm sorry, but if a film makes me laugh out loud several times, it is funny. Further, if I am still awake and laughing at the end, it is an entertaining movie.

Lets set the players:

Kevin Mundy as Adam, the most popular senior at his High School. Mary Gross and Matt Frewer as his religious parents Reagan Pasternak as Amber, narrator of the story, Adams steady, and a career virgin, who is saving herself for marriage. Alycia Purrott as Gynger, 15 1/2 year old nymphette who seduces Adam, and ends up pregnant. Scott McCord as Chuck Clopperman, the cheap attorney hired to defend Adam.

As the story opens, Amber is talking about her nearly perfect boyfriend (except for some small problems in their senior year). She mentions that, although there is a lot of sex going on in High School, she thinks waiting is better, and the people having sex aren't having fun doing it. During the narration, we are watching examples of High School couples "doing it," or getting ready to. One of the couples is doing it in a car. This is the unknown actress I asked about a few days ago. I would still like to identify her, as she had the only actual exposure in the film.

Adam is lured by Gynger, and does her in the bathroom of the local Little Chicken. His best friends promise not to tell, then spread it all over the High School. Meanwhile, Adam and Gynger are finding lots of opportunities. Shortly after Adam's 18th birthday party, Gynger discovers she is pregnant. They tell Adam's parents, or, to be more exact, she tells Adam's parents over dinner. "I am pregnant, you know, like Mary was with Jesus, only I know who the father was." The mothers reaction was to support the baby, because, after all, "A baby is a gift from God, a precious bundle of joy, even if it is a bastard." Adam and Gynger had been hoping for money for an abortion, so they tried Ginger's mother, who said, "Why you no good leg spreadin' over-ovulatin' little slut." Gynger's mother then tried to stone them with household items. The police are called, and Gynger's mother is off to jail, but the statutory rape becomes a matter of police record. When the local district attorney, who is running for mayor, decides to make an example of Adam as a campaign issue, and go for the maximum penalty of 30 years, the fun really starts.

Many see this film as showing what a terrible problem underage sex is, but I don't agree. The problem here was not the age of Ginger, or the age of Adam. In fact, she was the sexual aggressor, and was by far the more mature of the two. The real problem was irresponsible sex without protection. Had either of them thought to use birth control, there would have been no movie to make. While the film is mostly tongue in cheek and played for laughs, it does show the consequences of irresponsible reproductive behavior, and should probably be required viewing for all young teens.

There are no reviews at all. A handful of IMDB readers have it at 4.2/10, which is far too low. I would say 6.2 would be more accurate. I included images of Alycia Purrott, even though she didn't show any of our favorite parts. I suspect she may be underage, she is really hot, and I think we will see much more of her.

Sleepers (1996) is the Barry levinson film which is split into two halves. The first half details the story of some boyhood friends, basically good kids in a tough neighborhood, who allow a prank to get out of control and end up in juvenile hall together. The second half details their adult revenge on the guards who abused them in the facility. Only brief and anonymous nudity, but an impressive cast and a pretty good movie.

The People vs Larry Flynt (1996) is the story of the Hustler publisher who made it to the supreme court. if you remember correctly, his supreme court appearance wasn't about his porno, but rather about his right to make fun of celebrities. In my book, this places him slightly above Paine, Jefferson, Voltaire, and Lincoln in the defense of mankind's most important freedoms.

Sharpe's Enemy is actually a British TV mini-series. A good one, too, with about 14 episodes so far, about the uneasy alliances in the late stages of the Napoleonic Wars. Excellent character development, interesting historical trivia, and a very charismatic lead performance by Sean Bean. It has always amazed me that North America has embraced some lesser talents from the Isles like Liam Neeson and Hugh Grant, but the very talented Bean has stayed largely a British secret except for a chance to be a Bond bad guy. But I'm rambling, and New York Guy wrote the most perceptive review of this episode - "here's yer fokkin' review - Elizabeth Hurley's naked tits - now, review dis (grabs crotch)" The traditional "one crotch up" is kind of his equivalent of Siskel and Ebert's "two thumbs up"

Sharpe's Enemy always features some interesting performers in minor roles This particular one has Hurley, Assumpta Serna and Pete Postlethwaite. I'm sorry to report to his fans that People Magazine passed over Postlethwaite yet again for that world's sexiest man thing.
