There once was a time when Blue Lagoon was a fairly intelligent novel, written by a nautical surgeon, about the nature/nurture debate, examining how much of our behavior is innate and how much is learned, and perhaps how much is part of our "collective unconscious". It was filled with detailed descriptions of the flora and fauna and culture of the South Seas.

The movie threw out all this unnecessary thought and concentrated on the really important things like pretty pictures of tropical islands, a star vehicle for Brooke Shields, and a lot of sensationalist body double nudity that made it appear that underaged (15) Brooke was shedding her trousers in public. Christopher Atkins (19 at the time) did his own nudity, and plenty of it, including several frontals and, well, let's just say he won't be mistaken for John Holmes in the near future.

Although it is probably accurate to say it is a poor movie because it's just so dumbed down for a mass audience (unbelievable dialogue!), I watched it all the way through. It does have a certain fascination, and the images are beautifully rendered, so you could watch it without significant pain. The last two of Brooke are not from the movie, but from an extra on the DVD: a photographic diary that Brooke kept of her experiences on the set.

I'm thrilled with Aesthete's selection this week. It's about time somebody did justice to "Ragtime", Milos Forman's fine film based on Doctorow's excellent novel, loosely based on a real incident involving glamour girl Eveyln Nesbitt. This should really top off your collection of Elizabeth McGovern. Great work, Aesthete!

PLUS Fred, or as he is known in the accient Elventongue "Frodo", specializes in "outing" the harder action from the wholesome girls of Page Three and Playboy Newsstand Specials. Here are today's comments:

This is another piece of sensationalism. Young thug thinks he killed a woman. Sadistic Pete Postlethwaite, a wheelchair-bound rich guy, offers to shelter the guy from the police if the young man will agree to serve him. This basically means acting as his surrogate in sexual liaisons with hookers, while Pete watches in secret. Eventually, in a search for greater kicks, Pete wants the kid to kill a strange woman for him. Or maybe Pete also made the same deal with the woman to kill the kid. Or maybe the woman is working on her own to hoodwink both of them. Or maybe OJ is innocent. I don't even remember how it worked out at the end. You simply won't care because everyone in the movie is detestable, and you'll make no identification with any characters.

There is a TON of nudity, some of it quite explicit. Unfortunately, it is shot very poorly, with almost all interiors in a dark, blurry orange hue, and it is just hooker after hooker in rapid fire, maybe a dozen of them. The only thing resembling a celebrity, besides Postlethwaite, was Geraldine Pailhas, who is seen here in a collage and a single frame. The other two here are the obscure and somewhat elderly Suzanne Colin and one of the hookers who happened to be in reasonably bright light.
