Fiona (1998) is a mockumentary story of a hooker/addict in New York. Before I started the film, which has been praised for gritty realism, I expected that the title character would come from a bad childhood, be essentially unhappy with her life, skinny from the drug use, and a lesbian. Unfortunately, that is exactly what I found. Her shooting 3 cops because they were arresting a guy she didn't like was a minor surprise, but the film was mostly what I expected.

Fiona was played by Anna Thomson, who showed everything including a gyno shot is several scenes including a lesbian encounter, a bath with another woman, and various other sexual situations. Alyssa Mulhern as her girlfriend from the crack house also showed pretty much everything. The films is rated 7.0/10 at IMDB, but with only seven votes. I found it slow, predictable and depressing. C-

I Shot Andy Warhol (1996) is based on the true story of 60's radical Valerie Solana, who wrote the SCUM Manefesto arguing that men were no longer necessary (SCUM = Society for Cutting Up Men). Valerie wrote a play called "Up Your Ass" and wanted Warhol to produce it. When he ignored her, she shot him.

I am at odds with the reviewers on this one, who score it between 3 stars (Maltin and Berardinelli) and 3 1/2 (Ebert). They praise the production design, acting by Lili Taylor as Valerie and Jared Harris as Warhol, and the insightful look into two unusual characters. I saw it as a crazy bull dyke manufacturing a reason to kill a weird and immature but popular Warhol. At the same time, I found it very pretentious. Lili does show her breasts, as do Martha Plimpton in a very dark scene, and Anna Thomson in a picture within a picture. If this sounds like fun to you, go for it. The genre is arthouse 60's strange. C.
