  • Members' bonuses. "In the Shadows"

    a
I've never seen this scene 'capped before. "In the Shadows" is a surprisingly effective movie. It brings the refined into contact with the sleazy, and tries to imagine what might happen. Joely Richardson is an heiress dying of cancer. Molly Parker is a nice enough girl from a nice enough poor family, who is stuck on the very bottom rung of the economic ladder, and is desperate to move up. Her boyfriend is a a sexy guy, and not a bad person, but an unambitious alkie drifter. Together, they eventually concoct a scheme to become Joely's caretakers, and to win her favor so that they will make a bundle in her will.

Up to there it was straight formula, but the first thing I liked about the movie is that Joely sees right through the scheme, but she doesn't care. Why should she? Instead of dying alone with no friends or family, she's going to have two people wait on her hand and foot and give her companionship. Why fight it? She doesn't even mind that the guy pretends to be in love with her, because she really enjoys him. He's kind of a bimbo, and he's uneducated, but who cares about that social stratification crap when you're dying? Gradually, he is changed by the whole process and becomes a worthwhile person. Molly, on the other hand, doen't hurt anyone, and achieves her economic goals, but she doesn't grow spiritually. She really doesn't "get it" on the whole love thing.

Of course, you'll need anout 20 handkerchiefs for any movie about a beautiful woman falling in love while dying of cancer. Joely did do a bare-chest scene, but her character had breast cancer and they were both removed. The scene was to show how he finds love for her beyond her scars. I'm not the most tasteful guy in the world, but even I left that one uncapped. Parker, on the other hand, stripped. It seems strange to watch her in sex scenes. She seems like your kid sister, and you don't know whether to watch or turn away. I watched. (She did a full frontal in a movie called "Kissed" - in the Encyclopedia)

FR has only one today, but a nice one: Carmen Electra at the MTV Awards.

Plus I think I probably screwed up on the Page Three babe today, but I can't seem to find the e-mail from Why Scans. If we get our signals together, I'll run two days. However, we have some commentary from Fred on other Page Three lovelies fromt he past, as follows:

    Karen White was featured as Page 3 Karen on Scoopy's a couple of weeks ago. She's also a new favorite in Playboy's Newsstand Specials. She has done more explicit work than in these pics, but you should still enjoy them. (#1 , #2 , #3 , #4 , #6 , #7 , #8 , #9 , #10 , #11)

    Members' bonuses. "Gridlock'd"

    a
I'm not the first guy to 'cap, Thandie Newton in "Gridlock'd", but I tried to get the quality of the collages to the top level. The bathtub scene isn't capped very often (it's dark, but I had some success with it). Gridlock'd isn't a bad watch. It was marketed as a comedy, but it isn't really. It's a gritty urban drama that happens to be funny because sometime reality is funny, and it stays true to reality. It's actually pretty grim. Tim Roth and Tupac are junkie musicians trying to kick, shattered into reality by an OD from Thandie, their lover/friend and lead singer. They find that it is much harder to kick than it seems. The urban bureaucracy chases them from agency to agency, from form to form, until they give some serious thought to continuing as junkies. But the situations aren't unrealistic or absurd. it isn't like the hold-up in "Take the Money and Run", for example, but rather like a real day or two trying to do exactly what they are trying to do without a medicaid card. I liked the movie, and I thought Tupac was quite effective in his role. He's very natural and the camera just loved the angles of his face. He was a controversial guy, a gangsta rapper who many reviled for his references to violence against women and policemen. I guess you probably know that he was shot several times in Las Vegas after a prize fight, and died after a few days in a coma. He was 25.

If you thought Thandie was just atrocious in "Beloved", I agree with you. She was about on the Shatner level in that movie, but give her another chance and watch this one, because she is not without some talent, and she has the looks as well. She did a good job in this movie, and even the ever-hammy Tim Roth kept it somewhat under control, although his accent is truly strange. He seems to be from the part of Brooklyn nearest to Sydney, Australia. I don't know why he didn't just use his natural speech. I mean, what the hell, street junkies can be from anywhere, right? Still, that is a minor point. He did well, so did the others. The movie is fun and seems to have a lot of insight into the streets.
