  • Well, you can't go wrong with this movie. "Romance with a Double Bass", a short 1974 British film adapting a Chekhov short story. Amazing that Chekhov had time for short stories, given his internationally acclaimed plays, his responsibilities as a physician, and his duties on the deck of the Enterprise. The film is only 40 minutes long, and Connie Booth is only clothed for about 4 of those 40 minutes. So if you've dreamed about her from "Fawlty Towers", here's the goodies.

This compares to scores around 8.4 for such movies as "Casablanca" and "Citizen Kane". And Hollywood thinks it can underestimate our intelligence! Hell, we're much stupider than they can even suspect.

  • from the vault of obscurity, here's Melissa Raven in "Gold Coast". This is a made-for-cable movie starring David Caruso. It is surprisingly good. Unlike the typical crappy big-budget mystery/thrillers, it includes some subtleties. 1) Caruso sometimes screws up and needs help. 2) I was actually fooled by some of the plot twists, unlike some stylish top-line films like The Usual Suspects and The Spanish Prisoner, two good films with no surprises of any kind if you watch a lot of movies of this stripe. Strange that the director filmed Caruso running in this movie. He plays a tough enough guy, and he's capable enough at it, but he runs slowly, with his thighs together and his wide hips swaying. It destroys the illusion.
  • from the vault of obscurity, here's Amanda Royle in "Two Deaths". This is a stagy movie, fundamentally has only about six characters and one set. Emotionally gripping, but one of those plays where all the characters spend all their time stripping each other down to the emotional core and betraying each other's secrets, kind of like the Springer show with British accents.

  • Greta Scacchi only did a modest poorly-lit nude scene in "Killing Beach". Odd movie. In a nutshell, Scacchi uses the heart-wrenching plight of the Vietnamese boat people to get a fabulous tan. OK, I'm exaggerating, but it's a superficial, cliched movie on a serious subject. It's a serious film, but lightweight.

The dog was smarter than the boy, in kind of an ironic look at the post-Apocalyptic cliche thing. Of course, the dog had a bit of a head start in that the boy was played by Don Johnson.
