A Taste of Flesh

Doris Wishman switched gears in 1965 from a
maker of nudist movies to something more serious, but
with topless women still scattered about. A Taste of
Flesh (1967) is one of her more interesting, plot-driven
movies, although it is in places very, very odd.
Story goes that a pair of hitmen invade an apartment
with a trio of women - two with some taste for other
women and one less enthusiastic friend - because he
apartment has a window that offers a clear shot at the
visiting leader of a fictitious country. Drama
ensues.
Darlene Bennett and Layla Peters play the resident pair
and Peggy Steffens plays the reluctant object of Layla's
attention. These are very clean women. Peggy
takes a bath and Layla takes a shower before the hitmen
arrive. And Darlene changes clothes, so bingo -
you got yourself some T and A.
Layla grabs a transparent robe when one of the guys
interrupts her shower, which means she spends most of
the movie almost nekkid. That's some mighty good
news, particularly as she struggles to avoid the guy's
lustful clutches. As the two of them roll around
on a bed, Doris keeps on the camera on Layla's body and
sho' 'nuff you get quite the eyeful.
Darlene was a staple of the New York grindhouse scene
for the years 1963 to 1968, when she starred in some 30
movies, so her presence in Taste of Flesh is welcome and
expected. And Peggy, who often used the name
Cleo Nova, was also very popular over the same period.
Layla, by contrast, made this movie and only one other,
despite her obvious assets.
Bottom line here is A Taste of Flesh is much better but
less revealing that some of Wishman's earlier work and
most other grindhouse offerings of the late 1960's.
