"No Way Out"

No Way Out (1987) is my last Sean Young redo for now. It is a Kevin Costner film, where he is a Lt. Cmdr with hopes of a Washington assignment. An old school friend is aide to the newly reappointed Secretary of Defense (Gene Hackman). He is introduced at a Washington party. Afterward, he hits on Sean Young, who isn't interested in doing the twist with him, but has more of a pas de deux in mind. After taking full advantage of the back seat of a limo, where we see nipple slips in the full screen version. they go to a friend's apartment. Sean talks her friend into loaning the apartment, then peels off her coat in the hallway, and is wearing nothing underneath.

The 4/3 version on the DVD is full negative, and shows more exposure than the Widescreen, which resulted from a crop top and bottom. Turns out that the reason Sean didn't want to use her apartment is that she is having a mad affair with the secretary of defense. Costner goes to see, and becomes a newsworthy hero, so the Sec. Def. decides bringing him to Washington would be a good public relations step, and Costner is made liaison to the CIA from the DOD. Costner and Young are obviously having a real thing, and when she tries to leave Hackman, he pusher her, and she falls to her death. Hackman's aide comes up with an ideal cover-up plan. They have evidence that someone else has been seeing Young, and invent a mythical Soviet spy, Yuri, making him the prime suspect. Costner is assigned to the case, and find himself looking for himself. Up to this point, it is a very good thriller with an interesting idea. Of course we all know that politicians would never kill a young women, then cover it up, but the plot is not too outlandish up to this point. Then, they throw in a totally preposterous plot twist at the end, ruining a pretty good thriller.

In addition from the breasts, buns, and possible bush from young, two Philippina strippers show their breasts. IMDB readers have this at 7.1 of 10. Ebert was overflowing with praise, and awarded 4 stars. Critics unanimously liked it. It grossed $35.5M. As the goofs listed at IMDB show, the script was not very carefully researched. Nonetheless, it has both popular and critical acceptance, and is probably a C+.

    "Y tu mamá también"

Y tu mamá también (2001) is one of the best films I have screened this year, and one of the best, and most honest coming of age/buddy.road trip movies I have ever seen. There are two reasons for this. First, the basic story is told with incredible insight and honesty. Second, the film highlights the class distinction between the wealthy principals in the story, and the people living in poverty that they blissfully pas by during the road trip.

As the film opens, we see a young couple screwing energetically underneath a poster of Harold and Maud. I don't know about you, but I have trouble imagining a more promising first scene in a film. Turns out it is Diego Luna saying goodbye to his girlfriend Ana López Mercado, who is touring Italy for the summer with her girlfriend María Aura. Which brings us to the second scene, where Gael García Bernal, is similarly saying goodbye to to Aura for the summer. Bernal and Luna are best friends. After the girls leave, they despair of getting laid for the summer, then, at a huge wedding, they meet Maribel Verdú, who is married to one of their cousins, and is several years older than them, a fact that doesn't stop them from hitting on her, and offering to take her on a road trip to a mythical beach called Heaven's Mouth. Several days later, she discovers that her husband has been unfaithful, and takes them up on it.

They get hurried directions from a friend to a distant beach, pick her up, and, armed with munchies and lots of drugs, the three are off on the adventure. Things get much more tense when sex rears its ugly head. First, Verdu sleeps with one of them. Unbeknownst to her, he picks that moment to tell his friend that he has slept with his girlfriend. Verdu assumes that she has caused the obvious rift in the friendship, and seduces the other to patch things up. After that, there are more admissions, a very bold threeway near the end, and then a conclusion that I did not see coming.

IMDB says 8.0 of 10, Ebert awarded 4 stars, and it won several international awards. It was also nominated for a Golden Globe. You won't see a more honest coming of age film. The sex is treated explicitly and honestly, the characters and their motivations are believable, the photography is excellent, and the social commentary about the class differences in Mexico comes through loud and clear, even though it is not done in a heavy handed manner. Normally, the level of exposure and simulated sex, the fact that it is subtitled, and the fact that, superficially, this is a film for teenagers would cause me to score this a C+, but it is a total treat to anyone who will watch it with an open mind, and is therefor at least a B.

    From the Tuna Mail Bag

I received an e-mail berating me for not being smart enough to detect that my Sean Young caps from last night were body doubles, and he was nice enough to give me his patented, simple and foolproof method for detecting a body double. "If you see body parts, and no face, it is a body double." Would that life were this simple. I assume he was referring to the bath nozzle masturbation scene in Men, which did not show her face for most of it. Below are two images from that scene, which convinced me that it was her.

  • Sean Young (1, 2)

I would never claim to be infallible in detecting the use of doubles, but it might interest some of you to know my thinking process.

If a scene has no cuts, and shows a face in the scene, it is not a double, even though there is no single frame that shows both face and body.

If the actress shows body parts and face elsewhere in the film, and the bodies look the same, it is not a double.

If there are no scenes with both face and body parts, but someone associated with the film has stated that it was not a double, it is not a double.

If it is an actress who has done a lot of nudity, both before and after the film in question, and the body parts look the same, it is not a double.

If all of the exposure is headless, and there have been no credible claims that a double was not used, then it is likely a double.

If all of the exposure is in long shots, and the face is not distinguishable, it is likely a double.

If a double shows in the credits, it is a double.

If the actress denies the nudity, it may or not be a double. Actresses often do nudity early in their careers that they later regret.

I believe all of my images from Men and Motel Blue to be Sean Young, even though many of them do not show a face.

The Truth About Charlie Ghost Ship Swept Away
    Ebert 3 2 1
    Berardinelli 3 2 1.5
    Rotten Tomatoes 30 12 7
    Metacritic 52 26 11
    Movies.yahoo B- C- C-

There is suckitude, and then there is suckitude. The Truth About Charlie (opening today) got 30% good reviews. But that seemed like Casablanca compared to Ghost Ship (opened today), with 12%. In turn, Ghost Ship seems like The Shining when compared to Swept Away. In a sense, all three are remakes. Charlie is a remake of Charade. Swept Away is a remake of Lina Wertmueller's Swept Away, and Ghost Ship is more or less an uncredited ripoff The Shining, except with the Overlook Floating Hotel.

The Truth About Charlie is watchable. Ghost Ship is terrific for about twenty minutes, then irredeemably awful. Swept Away should be swept away, and already was. It is already gone from theaters, about two weeks after opening. The caps are not DVD quality, to say the least, but two of the films just opened today!

    • Francesca Rettondini in Ghost Ship, playing the part of Francesca Rettondini, and thus able to enjoy all the fun of acting with none of that tedious memorization.
    • Madonna in Swept Away. (1, 2) Very little nudity. Madonna's face looks ancient, even though her body is hard and muscular. I think the scene in collage one will show some nudity in the DVD, but the picture here cuts off part of Madonna, even though we can see the guy's butt.
    • Olga Sekulic in the truth About Charlie. There isn't much too see in this, the film's beginning, but I love the idea of starting out a PG-13 movie with a breast!

    • The yellow asterisks indicate that I wrote the review, and am deluded into thinking it includes humor.
    • If there is a white asterisk, it means that there isn't any significant humor, but I inexplicably determined there might be something else of interest.
    • A blue asterisk indicates the review is written by Tuna (or Lawdog or Junior or C2000 or Realist or ICMS or Mick Locke, or somebody else besides me)
    • If there is no asterisk, I wrote it, but am too ashamed to admit it.

    Oz
    'Caps and comments by Oz:

First, a contribution to your 'Other crap' segment:

    www.casiotoughsolar.com/

Navigate through all the flash crap, and go to the TV ads. The ad on the right with the tennis players (at the moment) is the one with nudity. I'm not sure how often they actually change the ads. In Australia, we saw the ads on TV with a black censoring rectangle inviting you to go to the above site to see the uncensored version.

Also...a short note for PhD. There are topless caps of Nike Arrighi from another Hammer horror film, "Countess Dracula". I made a few 'caps that can be found in the July 28, 2002 edition of the Fun House in the back issues.

    "Vampire Circus"
The caps of a fully naked Domini Blythe from the horror film Vampire Circus have appeared before but there are also some topless views of Christina Paul. Serena Weber is fully body painted but still looks good.

    "Cass"
Cass is an Aussie film and the clearest topless nudity comes from some native girls in some secret women's ritual. Michelle Fawdon is also briefly topless and Judy Morris shows some pokies.

    • Michelle Fawdon (1, 2)
    • Judy Morris
    • Unknowns (1, 2)

    "Doppelganger"
Some brief topless shots of Drew Barrymore in the very mediocre Doppelganger.

    • Drew Barrymore (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)

    "Airheads"
A lot of cleavage and a brief upskirt by Nina Siemaszko in Airheads as she does the old 'sex with her knickers on' movie trick.

"Return to Cabin by the Lake"
Another actress doing the old 'sex with her knickers on' movie trick is Kandyse McClure and she shows some pokies in Return to Cabin by the Lake.

    • Kandyse McClure (1, 2, 3)

    "Street Smart"
There's a lot of cleavage and upskirt shots of Kathy Baker in Street Smart and the briefest of bush by Marie Barrientos in her brief appearance.

    • Kathy Baker (1, 2, 3)
    • Marie Barrientos (1, 2)

    "Into the Night"
The nude shots of Michelle Pfeifer in Into the Night have appeared before in the Funhouse a few times, or are they a body double? However the pokies by Kathryn Harrold I think are new and there's a brief appearance by Deedee Pfeifer as a hooker. Sue Bowser and Peggy Sands are clearly topless, and Stacey Pickren shows the briefest of nipples.

    "Charlie's Angels"
These are caps of Cheryl Ladd in a Charlie's Angels episode and they are more of a memorial to a lost opportunity. There was a great set of pokies by Cheryl in a bikini when scuba diving but I wasn't fast enough with the VCR. You get a brief glimpse of what was missed with the bottom centre cap. If you see the episode, I've labelled the caps, coming up get the VCR going.

    "Gold in the Streets"
A side view of a topless Candra Doherty in her sole contribution to the movie world in Gold in the Streets.

    "Traffic"
Some brief pokies by a full-figured Catherine Zeta-Jones in Traffic.

    "Lucky Numbers"
Some nice caps of Lisa Kudrow in Lucky Numbers, sexy is not a word I can apply to Lisa.

    "Cowboy Way"
Kristin Baer is topless in Cowboy Way but does the old 'hand over the breasts' trick that hides the goodies.

    "Blindfold"
Some sexy shots of Claudia Cardinale in Blindfold. Unfortunately, they're spoiled by Rock Hudson, a man that I've had trouble accepting in a romantic role since he was outed as a rampant pillow biter.

    • Claudia Cardinale (1, 2)

    "Greek Tycoon"
The frontal nudity in Greek Tycoon comes from Marilu Toto. Jacqueline Bisset provides the sexy shots.

    • Marilu Toto (1, 2, 3)
    • Jacqueline Bisset (1, 2, 3)

    Hankster
    'Caps and comments by Hankster:

Today it's more "Babes in Bondage" as we look at Tanya Roberts in 1979's "Tourist Trap" as she winds up tied up at the hands of the evil Chuck Conners. Tanya escapes only to wind up with an ax in the back of the head. No nudity there so...lets go way back to 1966 for two unknowns all tied up in a sexploitation flick called "House of Cats".

    • Tanya Roberts in "Tourist Trap" (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)

    • Unknowns in "House of Cats" (1, 2)

    A note from Scoop Jr...

I goofed up Hankster's links yesterday, so incase you missed it, here is yesterday's "Babe in Bondage"... an unknown buxom blonde slave girl up for auction in the 1970 nudie sex flick, "The Notorious Cleopatra".

    • Unknown buxom and full frontal blonde. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)

    Variety
    Rie Rasmussen
    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)

The model posing almost 100% nude (shoes only). Great scans by Blackshine.

    Charlotte Rampling
    Elizabeth Whitcraft
    Lisa Bonet

Dann takes a look at the 80's classic "Angel Heart". Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro we both fantastic, and of course there was plenty of nudity! The collage of former Cosby kid Lisa Bonet is a must for her fans, and also quite large (about 530k).

    From the Mail Bag
    Hey Scoop,

Any 'caps of Catherine Oxenberg from her movie "Overexposed". I saw this movie years ago--I remember it had very good exposure from Catherine. This is back when she had a little more weight (now she is too skinny) and looked great. If memory serves she showed both breasts and some pubes.

    Hey Scoop,

Well, just like the message about Kristy Swanson a couple months ago, this is good news and bad news. The good news: Tia Carrere is going nude. The bad news: it's in the bunny mag so we won't get to see anything in the Funhouse. But, for those that don't have a subscription, If Tia's spread is anything like Kristy's, I figure it might be worth spending the 5 bucks to pick a copy.
