Damn, I wish
these three movies were on DVD. In two
cases, "Women in Love" and
"Zardoz", they are noteworthy
films with nudity from famous performers,
but always available on faded prints that
look like those old sepia photographs.
Glenda Jackson got her clothing off in
"Women in Love", although the
movie is more infamous for the nude
wrestling scene between Oliver Reed and
Alan Bates. This is Ken Russell's
notorious adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's
controversial classic. Miss Jackson not
only got her shirt off, but won the Oscar
for best actress that year. Most of the
time, director Ken Russell had his head
in the sewer of sensationalism, and he
made some poor films, notably his biopics
of Valentino, Liszt, and Tschaikovsky,
his silly rendering of The Who's
"Tommy", and "Whore".
On the other hand, his techniques could
be very powerful. He was known for
sexually explicit and symbolic imagery,
linked together with rapid-fire cuts and
a smattering of what seemed to be
drug-induced hysteria. This may seem de
rigeur today, but the pacing of movies
was more languid thirty years ago, with
MTV still far in the future. Some of his
films, like The Devils, Women in Love,
and Altered States, were much admired,
and even his most self-indulgent films
had their ardent supporters, if for no
other reason than that he gave them his
unique artistic thumbprint. I liked
"The Devils" and its root
source, Aldous Huxley's "The Devils
of Loudon", a Freudian look at the
power of sexual repression. Russell is
still kicking around, in his 70's now,
still directing occasionally. He wrote
and directed that ill-starred Uri Gellar
biopic a couple years back, which I'm
curious to see, but which appears to be
unavailable on tape. From our point of
view, the perspective of celebrity
nudity, he's a special treasure because
he routinely got famous people to strip
in front of his camera.

Glenda
Jackson. These bring to mind a trivia
question. Which Oscar-winning actress has
had the most significant nudity in her
awarded performance? From my memory, I'd
say Jackson is the bronze medalist.
Marlee Matlin had a nude scene in
Children of a Lesser God, which must get
the silver. The gold medal must go to
Holly Hunter, who had extensive nudity in
The Piano. Am I forgetting anyone who
showed more than those three?

"The gun
is good ... the penis is evil".
(It's the first line of Zardoz - it's a
population-control mantra). And so we are
moving on from Ken Russell to another
British director from the same
generation, John Boorman, the
distinguished filmmaker who gave us
Deliverance, Excalibur, and others.
Zardoz is not his best, by any means, but
I've found that it has a fascination that
can stand up to repeated viewings. In the
distant future, the gulf between upper
and lower classes has become so wide that
the upper classes live as all-knowing
immortals in sheltered
politically-correct paradise, while the
rest of the world has reverted to Stone
Age savagery, albeit with guns.
Unfortunately, the paradise is flawed,
and even some of the most-blessed members
of the community find it sterile and
lifeless. Boorman wrote the screenplay
and directed. He reached some great
heights at times. There are some
excellent images and concepts, and even
the bad scenes can be riveting for their
inherent imaginative cheesiness. It may
not be a masterpiece, but it was an
original. In addition, Sean Connery looks
lovely in a dress, so this may be
Rodman's favorite film. Here is the
lovely Charlotte Rampling

Rampling. Fast-motion scene that is
consequently blurred in individual
frames.
|
This collage
of Sally-Anne Newton has two problems
that I'd like to hear your thoughts on.
First, the bare-breasted horseback scene
is commonly attributed to Charlotte
Rampling, not Newton, and the horseback
scene was cut completely from the copy I
rented. Second, when I did vidcaps from
this movie years ago, I labeled this
actress Sara Kestelman. One guy wrote me
to say it looks nothing like Kestelman,
so I watched the movie again. Connery
called this woman May, and May was listed
in the cast as Kestelman, so what could I
say? But then again, half the time you
can't figure out what the hell is going
on in this film. Although it isn't so
profound, it is sometimes difficult to
see the relationship of the individual
scenes to the movie as a whole. Anyway,
based on RDO's I.D. in this collage, and
based on the guy's letter, I suppose this
isn't Kestelman, but Newton, although I
don't think that is the same actress on
horseback. Somebody more familiar with
these actresses, please clear all this up
for me! I don't even own a copy of this
film to look it up again.

one is Kestelman.
|
I don't know
who the hell these women are, but there
are some great bodies in there. The scene
was a precursor to a similar visual
design in Peter Greenaway's "The
Pillow Book"
|
The third RDO
film this week is not such a bad movie
either, made watchable by some
interesting comic touches and some quirky
performances (like Jeff Bridges as a
woman). RDO also did several collages of
that scene in "Thunderbolt and
Lightfoot" in which Susan Oliver and
the guy are tied together.

More odd
images from that "Aimee und
Jaguar" movie. I have not seen this
German movie, but it is a highly praised
story about two women who carry on a love
affair in Berlin during World War 2.
Critics extolled not only the accurate
period details, but the look at how
something as pernicious and all-pervasive
as Hitler's wars, genocide, and National
Socialism affected the real lives of real
people away from the front lines. Jaguar
is not only queer, but Jewish as well,
which makes Aimee's loving her about as
sensible as kidding Hitler about his
haircut. Here's Heidi Makatsch as the
housewife and mother who turns from her
cheating husband to a forbidden love. If
they ever need an actress to play Jeri
Ryan's evil twin, Heike looks like our
girl.

and the woman portrayed by Makatsch is
still alive in Berlin. Although reviewers
have raved about this film, the
English-speaking world has yet to take
notice of it.

This one
isn't notable because of nudity, but
because the designer almost managed to do
the impossible. He came damned close to
making the "world's most beautiful

gotta pump up sales, eh? If the outfit
makes Casta look like Tonya Harding,
imagine what it will do for your mom.

I've seen other pictures of Kate in which
she is quite trim, but she sure was bulky
in this role. There is one scene of her
shot from 3/4 overhead which my daughter
saw and said "look at that fat
butt". I know that Elle gained 25
pounds for this role. Maybe Kate did the
same. Although her bulk may not have done
wonders for her butt, it sure gave her
chest a full look.

Bo Derek in
"10". No nudity in this one,
but beautiful close-ups. Bo did me a
great act of kindness once. I sat next to
her on a plane from Miami to Lima a few
years back, and pretty much left her
alone. Nothing unusual about that. She
flew there for the opening of the first
Blockbuster. You have to sit next to
somebody, after all, and with all the
flying I did, sooner or later I'd see Bo
or Frank Cesno or Bob Woodward or
somebody familiar plop down next to me.
The cool thing was this: she was staying
in the same hotel in Lima, and she
acknowledged me the next morning in the
lobby when we were planning our day with
the local Mobil guys. You don't think I
lived off that for a couple years?

sleazebag who discovered, promoted, and
married her, but ultimately didn't belong
in her whitebread world and couldn't keep
her. His estrangement drove him over the
edge and he ended up killing her and
himself. True, tragic story. Stylish
