"The Harrad Experiment"

The Harrad Experiment (1973) Uncut version. We have discussed this to death already, but here are a few random thoughts on this version. First, it is amazing how much difference just a few minutes of nudity make in the film. The impression when watching is that the film is wall to wall nudity. Rather than trying to bring the book to the screen, I think this was more of an exploitation effort. They were capitalizing on a popular book, popular youth culture attitudes, and some naked people. I have a certain nostalgic reaction to films from 1960 to 1976, and this one is no exception, but it is badly dated, and was not a particularly deep film even then. At any rate, the nudity speaks for itself.

    "Rattlers"

Rattlers (1976) is a recent Something Weird Video release of a Box Office International (Harry Novak) property, but it is one of his pick-up films, that is, films he acquired rights to after they were made by someone else. This is a cliche monster film. The government ditches a leaking nerve gas container in a mine shaft, not realizing that the shaft is a rattlesnake den. The gas makes them aggressive, and they go on the rampage a la The Birds, Arachnophobia, etc. A college professor is brought in to consult by the local police, and a young, attractive woman is hired to help him out and serve as his photographer. Guess as to the rest of the plot, and you will more than likely be correct.

IMDB readers have this at 3.8 of 10. It is not incompetent, and so has no bad film charm, it is just derivative and ordinary. Celia Kaye, as one of the victims, shows buns, and parts of her breasts in a bath tub death scene. I suppose this is a C-, only for genre addicts.

    • The yellow asterisks indicate that I wrote the review, and am deluded into thinking it includes humor.
    • If there is a white asterisk, it means that there isn't any significant humor, but I inexplicably determined there might be something else of interest.
    • A blue asterisk indicates the review is written by Tuna (or Lawdog or Junior or C2000 or Realist or ICMS or Mick Locke, or somebody else besides me)
    • If there is no asterisk, I wrote it, but am too ashamed to admit it.

Carole Davis is a musician and an actress. There's a story that has her turning down the role played by Appolonia Kotero in Purple Rain but co-writing a song with the artist then-, formerly-, and currently- known as Prince. Did some topless stuff in The Boyfriend From Hell and all-tatooed up in The Rapture (you can find caps of those scenes in the Funhouse back issues.. of course). But, and here's the good part, she appeared as the Guccione-mag's monthly person Jan 1980. Used the name Tamara Kapitas. Fourteen pictures. PETScan did em all and then worked on the best half of them. Topless in them all, gyno-cam in 1, 5 and 7, rear-view in 6.

Carole/Tamara was an extremely attractive woman with a body that should be required equipment for half of humanity, but then so should be six-pack abs and a 10-inch weasel on the other half. What an imperfect species we are.

It's a "Babe in Bondage" day as we go back in time to 1970 and an unknown in "The Notorious Cleopatra". This gorgeous slave girl is put up for auction while chained up stark naked. Those Harry Novak movies were something else.

    • Unknown topless and full frontal babe in bondage. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8)

I also threw in a couple of Natasha Henstridge from "The Whole Nine Yards", no nudity but this babe is sexy in or out of clothes.

"The Seawolves. The Last Charge of the Calcutta Light Horse"

Based upon a true story that was kept as a secret of the Crown until 1978. This movie was made in 1980 just after the official secrecy ended. It involved a cloak and dagger operation to remove a clandestine German radio operation in the neutral port of Goa.

This story is a mixture of romance, espionage, action and a twist of humor. The Brits suspect a German intelligence operation, based in Goa, is transmitting information on Allied shipping movements in the Indian Ocean. This information is used by a submarine to intercept and sink the British shipping involved.

Alas Goa is a possession of neutral (ostensively) Portugal. In order to shut down the German intelligence operation without overtly violating the port's neutrality, retirees from an inactive light cavalry unit in India are recruited. This was a clandestine operation with no medals recognition or other official glory.

The group poses as a bunch of drunken British retirees involved in a fishing party that somehow happens to show up late at night boarding the German vessels. Not only do these "drunks" end up on German flagged vessels, but also armed to the teeth with grenades, submachine guns and limpet mines.

The movie runs sort of slow at first. Alternating between the spying operation (involving Roger Moore and Gregory Peck) and the recruitment of the bored pensioners of the "Calcutta Light Horse Cavalry." Part of the fun is while the geriatric assault unit is training for the mission. One member's wife wonders about his sudden absence and interest in athletic conditioning. Her conclusion is that he is sneaking another woman on the side.

Roger Moore blunders about trying to run the spying operation in Goa while unwittingly getting romantically involved with Mrs. Cromwell (Barbara Kellerman), the head of the German Abwher unit.

The movie is loaded with great, older British actors such as David Niven, Trevor Howard, and Patrick Macnee. Gregory Peck delivers a valiant attempt at speaking with a British accent.

Definitely well made, and filmed on location in India. For those who like action based upon true events, it's worth picking up the DVD as they are found as a bargain in stores that carry it ($4.99 at Wal-Mart) or from Amazon at a slightly higher price.

Nudity: Brief breast flash by Kellerman as she throws a champagne bottle at one of her own moronic local operatives as he tries to kill Roger Moore.

    IMDB rating 6/10
