"Desperado" (1995)

Columbia Tristar is now releasing what it calls Superbit Collection films. They have no special features of any kind, but top quality audio and video. The quality, based on a sample of 2, is there. Desperado has tons of atmosphere, lots of action, and a stellar cast, but not much in the way of plot. Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek sizzle together, and the opening scene between Steve Buscemi and Cheeck Marin is a classic, but the good guy gets screwed and seeks revenge plot is not enough to sustain a film. Hayek is in a short sex scene with Banderos, and it is lit and cut in such a way that you can't really see much at normal speed, but, thanks to DVD and one frame at a time, there are a few clear images of her breasts.

Maltin, Ebert and Berardinelli agree at 2 stars, IMDB readers say 6.6/10, and I will give it a C. Fine for fans of the stars, and those who like action films in a western setting, but not much crossover appeal. The Mariachi score featuring Los Lobos is very enjoyable.

    Bruiser is the attempted comeback film from George Romero, the king of the Pittsburgh film world. It has flashes of brilliance, but disappointed in the second half.


    One Night at McCool's is sort of a cross between Body Shots' technique, and Whipped's story line except that the one woman desired by so many men is actually just kind of a ditz, and not an evil schemer.

    Stardom is a Canadian mockumentary about the rise of a small-town junior woman's league hockey player to international supermodeling stardom. It is not so much a funny film as a nasty one, and that can be death to a comedy. It has funny moments, but there are some mighty long stretches with no wit.

    I agree with Scoop's review 100% on this one. It's not a bad movie, but not a great movie either. As Scoop mentioned, it was rather touching in parts and did explore some interesting ideas. However, the ending was quite lame.

    The nudity...there was a little exposure, but that's not what we have here, and I'll tell you why....The one thing that annoyed the hell out of me in this movie (even more than Madonna's new accent) was the lighting! Every single time Madonna's face was on camera they had one of those raccoon masks of light across her eyes. Presumably to hide the wrinkles, or make her look 20-something I guess. Regardless of why, the end result is that it didn't work, and looked ridiculous.

    In order to counteract the lighting and limited nudity, I had to see some real Madonna goodies! So today I bring you 'caps from "Body of Evidence" (1993). Yup, lot's of toplessness and even frontal nudity in these 'caps by Uco. Ahhh...much better.

    Unknown ZonononZor helps us get ready for Halloween with this collage from the Grade B or less, Spanish horror movie "Pieces" (1981). All three B's are on display.

    Co-written by the Euro-Trash film making legend, Joe D'Amato, it sounds a bit like a "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" rip-off. Here's the plot according to the IMDb..."Young co-eds are being cut up by a chainsaw killer on a college campus. The killer is attempting to put together a human jigsaw puzzle made from body parts."

  • Thora Birch Naturally it's her topless scene from "American Beauty". I just saw "Beauty" earlier this week, and I must say that it really is a fantastic film. If you haven't seen it in a while, you should. Now that the hype has died down, I actually enjoyed it even more.
