The Internship
2013
The
Internship is an
old-fashioned
1970s/1980s "slobs vs
snobs" comedy updated to
the internet era. The
most similar film is
Rodney Dangerfield's
Back to School, and
those two films are very
similar indeed. In the
Dangerfield film, a
middle-aged Rodney went
back to college and,
although originally a
fish out of water,
eventually won
acceptance because of
his generous, common
sense approach to life,
even managing to win a
competition
unexpectedly, and became
a source of inspiration
and fun to the kids in
their late teens and
early twenties. In this
film, Vince Vaughn and
Owen Wilson enroll in a
Google internship
program, and ... well,
the rest of the sentence
is exactly the same as
the previous one,
starting with the world
"although," changing
only the singular verbs
to plurals because it
take two guys to replace
Rodney. Vince and Owen
end up getting paired up
with the other outcasts
in a grueling
competition for a small
number of jobs, but
their team eventually
coalesces, and the kids
on their team all get
pushed on their way
toward happier and
fuller lives.
There are no surprises
along the way, and the
film has no original
take on the premise, but
there are a few laughs,
a few cathartic moments,
a little inspiration,
and some good-natured
banter between Vaughn,
Wilson and the
supporting players. It's
all very familiar, but
at least for me, that
means it's comfortingly
familiar.
