Arliss has a client who has the talent to play, but is being blackballed because he is rumored to be gay. That's an easy fix: trick him into taking a hot tub with two very young girls, bribe a  cop to bust him, and keep the National Enquirer informed. Voila! The client is a legendary stud and every club wants him. Danielle Ciardi and Kelly Michael played the hot tub girls. Danielle was a regular fixture in R-rated entertainment in that era. Kelly Michael has no other IMDb credits (at least not under that name).

There are two strippers at a bachelor party for Kirby, the friend-turned-colleague that Arliss uses as his factotum and troubleshooter. The actresses are Maria Ford and Keri Crawford. If you are up to speed on R-rated movies and videos, you are well acquainted with Maria Ford who had a long career in softcore, both before and after implants (in this case, after). Keri Crawford has no other credits under that moniker, which is her real birth name, but she has more than a hundred credits under her nom de porn, Keri Windsor.

The Mad Women's Ball

This is a new French-language melodrama about the often inappropriate institutionalization of the mentally ill and the cruel, extreme and primitive (mis)treatment of mental illness in the 19th century. Underlying everything is a severe scolding to history about the vulnerability and powerlessness of women in the male-dominated cultures of Western civilization.

So, yeah, a barrel of laughs.

It's grim and unrelentingly depressing, as you have probably already guessed. It's also completely obvious to an educated person who has even a smattering of knowledge about the subject matter. It plays out more like a documentary than a fictional narrative, but I suppose it is a sincere, well-intentioned and competent primer on the topic if you are previously unaware of how it all went down.

Ally McBeal was a reasonably successful show - it went for 112 episodes and 5 seasons from the 1997 to 2002. The show was set in a Boston law firm and starred Calista Flockhart in the title role of Ally McBeal. There was no real nudity but it did hold my interest with some of the outfits worn.

There's been quite a few 90s Hong Kong movies that have gotten a Bluray release recently, today's update features another, Black Cat, a 1991, um, incredibly flagrant rip-off of La Femme Nikita to the point where I wonder if Luc Besson called in the lawyers. You know the plot to La Femme Nikita; this movie is pretty much exactly the same.

Petulant girl (Jade Leung) is in America (actually filmed in Canada so a fair portion of the movie is actually in English) where she gets attacked and beats up a couple of guys and then in a stupor kills a cop. She goes to jail, escapes and is caught and taken in by a mysterious organisation who turns murderers into contract-for-hire killers against their will. Well, the girl excels and is let out of where she is housed but is forced to be a hired killer. In between times, she meets a man and falls in love and desperately tries to keep that side of her life secret, which is wishful thinking.

If you want a half-hour shorter La Femme Nikita with no nuance and barely any crisis, just plot, then you've got Black Cat. The movie is so fast it feels like it's playing at double speed to the point the movie almost forgets to have an ending and quickly tosses off something which suggests a sequel, which actually happened (sadly not on Bluray). So, if you want La Femme Nikita with an Asian woman, you can't go past... oh, wait ... there was the TV series Nikita, with Maggie Q which is better than this shameless rip-off.
