"Irma la Douce" (1963)

Irma la Douce (1963) -- Shirley Maclaine, Jack Lemmon, and an amazing amount of near exposure for its time had the film well on its way already, but a strong script, and excellent direction by Billy Wilder made it an absolute classic. Maclaine plays Irma, Paris streetwalker extrordinaire, and Lemmon starts the film as an honest cop. When Lemmon busts all of the girls and their clients, including his boss, he is kicked of the force, but ends up Irma's "manager." He falls in love, and can't stand her being with other men, so takes several night jobs to earn enough that she doesn't have to work, but becomes an impotent Brit who pays her 500 Francs per visit to play cards with him.

Those who have seen it remember the rest of the story, and those who haven't seen it should. Maclaine shows most of her breasts several times, but what many thought was actual breast exposure on VHS versions ends up being obscured by flesh colored pasties when you look frame by frame. There may be a hint of a nipple in one of the cleavage shots. The film is beautifully photographed, and was nominated for an Oscar in that category, as well as Best Actress, and won for best score adaption (Andre Previn). The film is a pure delight for the entire 2 hours and 27 minutes running time.

IMDB readers say 7.1/10, which is good for a comedy, Maltin says 2 1/2 stars, saying that it doesn't measure up to The Apartment, and I will give a B-. Even if you don't normally like comedy, you might enjoy this one, due to great cast, and offbeat energy (such as an alcoholic toy poodle). DVD transfer is decent, especially for its age, but is devoid of special features. The film stirred a lot of controversy at the time of release over theme and near nudity.

    "Crocodile Dundee" (1986)

Next week is not an especially good one for new releases on DVD, but there are a few excellent older titles finally coming to DVD. Paul Hogan's Crocodile Dundee is one of them. I was going to skip a plot outline and say that everyone new the plot, until I did the math and realized this film is 15 years old. Reporter Sue Charlton (played by newcomer Linda Kozlowski) goes to the remote town of Walkabout Creek to interview a local hero who survived a crocodile attack. She is so taken with Hogan that she brings him back to New York to see how he will fare in a big city. He does fine, and everybody loves him, including, eventually her.

The film was a smash with a US box office of $174.635m, and has done over $70m in rentals. The entire appeal of the film is Paul Hogan. Linda was easy to look at, not without acting ability, and this Julliard grad showed nearly all of a great butt in a scene in Australia where she is nearly eaten by a croc, but is saved by her now husband, Hogan. IMDB readers say 6.4/10, which is probably about right, as the film doesn't have a strong plot, and no real message. Maltin awards 3 stars, Ebert gives 2, and Berardinelli says three stars. I am going to give a B, not that it is great cinema, but it has wide appeal. The photography and some of the scenery is very nice, which produced good images. The DVD is bare bones, but an adequate transfer.

Transcript of Tony Blair's address to Parliament A very articulate, compassionate, supportive, and sensible speech.

The Big Day is a cutesy-pie comedy that was shelved until last week, after being filmed in 1999. Not really an awful movie, but there's no reason to watch it, and no nudity.

Killing Zoe  is a crime/splatter film from Tarantino's former writing partner. Imagine Pulp Fiction.  Take out the imaginative sets. Take out the clever circular structure. Remove the good lighting. Take out the funny dialogue, and translate half of the remaining dialogue into French. Locate the film in Paris. Check that. Actually shoot it in L.A., but SAY it's in Paris because ...  people will believe anything.

Catching up on old material, Opera is Dario Argento's apotheosis of the Italian horror/splatter films. Brilliantly filmed movie, interesting art design, some great concepts. All of that disguises the virtually non-existent plot and loony ending. In the war between style and content, this film represents a great victory for style. (Not to be confused with Dario's similarly-titled "Phantom of the Opera", which has the production values of a bad home video made from a first generation camcorder)

    'Caps and comments by RDO:
I bought "The Howling" because I read somewhere (It may have been The Sleuth) that Ms Brooks was very reluctant to do the full frontal nude scene and only agreed after being assured that the darkness and flames would keep all the important stuff hidden.

    Scorpion's Skinemax
Excellent Skinemax 'caps today...all from episodes of the late night cable series "Passion Cove". If you're a fan of boobs, robo-hooters, bum, bush, pseudo sex, lesbo lovin', shower scenes and/or skinny-dipping, then look no further.

  • Lola gets it on, does a shower scene, shows her breasts, and has a couple of guys go downtown. Almost explicit oral action in link #1. Not the norm for after hours softcore. (1, 2)

  • Maria Ford also does the deed (of course), shows a bit of bush as well as her robo-hooters. (1, 2)

  • Monique Parent shows it all and does it all! Link #4 has some really hot lesbo action with Venessa Blair. (1, 2, 3, 4)

  • and ...
    Natasha Henstridge

    Crystal Cass

Excellent 'caps from "The Outer Limits", episode "Bits of Love". Natasha is fully nude in several frames, but manages to get by only showing a slight hint of nipple here and there.

Crystal on the other hand, proudly shows her breasts, and even a hint of bush. Plus she also gets it on. Thanks to Jotell.

  • Christina Ricci nudity in "Prozac Nation" update!

    Scoop,

Just letting you know I have heard from several friends, and verified via several reliable sources that were at the "Prozac Nation" Toronto Film Festival screening, that the amazing Ms. Ricci is in fact topless at the very beginning of the film!

The scene itself is said to be pointless, but lasts about 35 seconds or so with a good 10 seconds of that containing clear topless and side angle exposure. The film evidently also played very well with what has been reported as amazing performances from most of the cast which includes Jessica Lange, Michelle Williams and what is said to be a suprizingly good dramatic Jason Biggs. (Something I never thought I'd say much less type.) I guess this is looking to be Christina's big break out in more ways than one.
