"Chaplin" (1992)

Richard Attenborough's 1992 film, Chaplin, has much going for it. The production value is up to his usual standards, and the cast includes Robert Downey Jr. who gives a flawless performance as Chaplin, and Moira Kelly, Anthony Hopkins, Dan Aykroyd, Marisa Tomei, Kevin Kline, Milla Jovovich and Diane Lane. Kelly, Jovovich and Lane showed breasts and more. The problem with this film is that even at 144 minutes, there was simply too much in the 78 year lifetime of the little tramp to cover well in one film. Most of the characters are hardly developed, and even Chaplin himself is not as fully explored as I would have liked. Watching the film is sort of like thumbing through a history book and looking at some of the photos. I will say that the ending, where Chaplin is given a lifetime achievement Oscar was very well done. Still, the performance by Downey and the exposure are enough reason to watch this.

"The Misery Brothers" (1995)

The Misery Brothers calls itself a comedy in the tradition of Airplane or Spy Hard. Unfortunately, most of the jokes are toilette humor, and the acting is almost non-existent or way over the top. The two exceptions are Pat Morita as Judge Ben E. Hana, and Debbe Dunning (the tool girl on Home Improvement). It wasn't that Morita's part was written any better than the rest of the film. Morita is just naturally funny. Dunning played a defense attorney/flirt to a t. Although she didn't quite show nipples, she teased wonderfully, and even showed a great butt-floss shot.

This movie spoofs The Godfather, The Blues Brothers, the OJ trial, A Few Good men, and dozens more. The story is of two brothers who were hidden from their father at birth. The first time he sees them, he dies of a heart attack. They are to inherit his 100 Million, provided they try to get married, and stay out of jail for a year. When they are framed for a double murder by the minister who gets the money if they don't, they end up in court with Dunning as their attorney. For you aficionados of fart jokes, this is a gold mine. The color saturation was outstanding.

    Susie Porter
    (1, 2, 3)
    Comments By Oz:
Welcome to Woop Woop is the story of Johnathon Schaech who starts the movie as a New York con man. A small episode at the beginning of the film with the mob sees him leave New York for his health. He decides to get away as far as possible - to Central Australia.

He is driving a Combi van and picks up Susie Porter who is hitchhiking. Her real motive is, however, to pick up a husband. One thing leads to another and Johnathan ends up married to Susie in Woop Woop. Woop Woop is an Australian expression and means a place in the middle of nowhere. That's where the 'happily' married couple end up. Overall, I found it an entertaining film.

Lia Williams A dark topless shot of Lia in "Shot Through the Heart". It's a film showing the stupidity of the conflict in the Balkans, and makes me glad I live a long way away.
    Paulina Gálvez
    (1, 2, 3)
Paulina stars in a Spanish film title "Portrait of a Woman with a Man in the Background" or Retrato de Mujer con hombre al Fendo. It can probably be described as a film about relationships and, like, many Spanish films, has plenty of gratuitous nudity.
    ZonononZor
Isabella Rossellini Nothing cutting edge here, but there is no denying that Zon's pretty darn good at this celebrity tribute collage thing. This one highlights Isabella in all of her naked glory from "Blue Velvet".

    Jr's tips:
This movie actually surprised, and delighted me! Granted it's not exactly "Citizen Kane", but it was quite entertaining. It's basically a comedy-horror movie, with a typical ridiculous storyline...A teenager is so lazy his hand becomes possessed by evil, begins to act on it's own and starts killing everybody and everything...idle hands=Devil's playground, that kind of thing. But what makes this movie stand out are two things...
  • The great comic relief, especially from Seth Green and Elden Ratliff as the pot smoking best friends to Devon Sawa's lead character. These two are your typical gen-X teens who can't be bothered with trivial things...like death. One of the best lines in the movie is when they first appear as walking undead. Our hero asks what happened and they reply by telling how they were "staring down this big tunnel of white light", but decided "We were like, forget that, man, it's too far."

The comedy also stands out with a lot of drug humor...bongs made from mufflers in auto shop, getting the hand baked, etc. And of course, the purposely anti-climactic ending!

  • The other highlight of this film surprisingly is Devon Sawa. Before this movie I had always tossed him into the "Tiger Beat"-pretty boy category. Just a face to be found plastered all over the walls of a 12 year old girl's room. But this kid demonstrated an uncanny ability for physical comedy in this movie. Forget Jim Carey or Jerry Lewis..they're clowns who make funny faces and fall down a lot. However, Sawa's ability to make me believe (within the context of the film of course) that his hand was a separate character, and was acting outside of Sawa'a control was outstanding! Highly recommended for meaningless entertainment purposes.
