Johnny's
comments:
Looking at a few movies both from Australia and
New Zealand which seem to be only available in low
quality. This was going to be a small update, but
of course I kept adding to it until I've finally
decided to post something.
Channelling Baby is a
1999 New Zealand drama that looks to have only
being released on VHS in New Zealand but some nice
person uploaded a VHS rip of the movie in nine
parts 13 years ago and it's still up -
https://youtu.be/xYDooSmE9lk - if you're
interested. The movie itself has a decent cast of,
at the time, up-and-comers like Danielle Cormack,
Kevin Smith, Joel Tobeck and Amber Sainsbury, who
play four people who have a connection to a
supposedly dead child from 20+ years previous.
They hash out what happened to the baby and it
seems that everyone has there own story and
conclusion. Well, despite the potential of the
cast, the movie itself suffers from what I call
True Love and Chaos syndrome (OK, I just made that
up) where a movie comes completely undone by a
completely implausible plot development. In the
case of Channelling Baby, it's a number of plot
developments that don't make a jot of sense and
cause the final act to turn into an exercise of
who can have the bigger histrionics. It's rare to
see a movie derail as bad as this does, it's quite
something...
Moving on, Danielle Cormack
has 4 nude scenes in the movie including her only
full frontal nude scene as far as I know. Sadly,
the movie comes with a big watermark in the bottom
half of the movie but considering this may be the
only way to ever see the movie, it'll have to do.
Strange that it hasn't had some sort of
remastering considering the cast or even turned up
somewhere like New Zealand On Demand, which would
be its most likely destination. But considering
its initial release, I don't see this coming out
any time soon.

Little Oberon is a 2006
Channel 9 telemovie that seemed to be set up for
series as a fair bit goes on that is barely
explained by the end. Tasma Walton's character
mostly floats around the town not really doing all
that much despite being the lead. Brittany Byrnes'
character has a lot more to do and there's a bunch
of decent actors filling out the cast. Shame it
never got picked up if that was the intention as
there was plenty of potential for further nudity.
Well, this post wouldn't have
been necessarily if my old capture card didn't
corrupt the files when I recorded Little Oberon
both times it aired in HD. I still can't believe
the same thing happened both times, absolutely
cursed. And it has never played since...

Preservation
is a 54 minute movie about a taxidermst
(Jacqueline McKenzie) who falls for a new bloke in
town but he also has interest from elsewhere.
There's a brief nude scene as Jacqueline bathes in
lavender.

Watermark is a 2003
cryptic drama that actually played at the Cannes
Film Festival in its year and then was never seen
again. No cinema release, didn't make DVD but the
director put up a fairly decent DVD quality
version on YouTube - https://youtu.be/_d9xw2mdu7U
- and I'm struggling to see how this movie got the
Cannes thumbs up. The movie is about a main coming
apart because of something that happened
previously (at least 20 years because Ellouise
Rothwell plays the guys' daughter). But the movie
spends the first two acts drip feeding what
happened and why or even if the man is depressed.
And then it's only cryptically mentioned what
happened and it isn't really mentioned why he has
brought it back up despite starting a new life
with someone else.
There's a very brief nude
scene when the bloke kisses Ruth McDonald's
breast, you barely see anything but it's better
than nothing. Plus Ruth spends a fair amount of
her screen time in a bikini. There are some brief
moments where the video throttles for a few frames
but that's from the original upload, nothing I can
do.
