"Bully"

Bully (2001) is based on a true story. A group of disenfranchised suburban kids in Hollywood, Florida, each incapable of doing much on their own, band together to kill Nick Stahl, a bully with a penchant for violence and rape. He constantly beats up his best friend, Brad Renfro, and rapes both Brad's new girlfriend, Rachel Minor, and her beast friend, Bijou Phillips. Renfro is a High School dropout and surfer, who doesn't even compete anymore, and who wants to move to avoid the problems in suburban Hollywood. Minor has self esteem problems, and worships Renfro, even though he physically abuses her, even after she becomes pregnant. Phillips has moved to Naples, is definitely hot, but equally aimless. She was married once for three months, and has a kid, but "that isn't a problem, because her grandmother takes care of it." Stahl is still in High School, college bound, and receives a great deal of pressure from his father.

Minor decides that Stahl has to die, and it is scarry how quickly her friends agree and plot the murder. Both Minor and Phillips show everything several times. There is not one exploitive moment in the entire film, and it opens a window into the lives of these kids. While the dramatic tension is provided by the murder, the film is really about these kids, who, despite being in a so called nice neighborhood and not wanting for physical comfort, live outside normal society.

IMDb readers have this at 7.1 of 10. Berardinelli pick it as one of his ten best of the year and awarded 3 1/2 stars. Ebert agreed with 4 stars. This is not an easy film to watch, but it is a very good one. All of the young performers were more than equal to their roles, and the film manages to hold interest even at a 113 minute length. This film is so well made that some who do not like teen violence films will want to see it, hence the proper score is B-.

    "The Day of the Jackal"

The Day of the Jackal (1973) is a thriller. The OAS wants to assassinate de Gaulle, and hire a professional hit man to accomplish the task. The story is how he plans the job, and how the French secret Service get wind of the plot, and zero in on the Jackal. It is an engrossing yarn full of twists and turns, and had the target not been an historical figure that we know was not assassinated, the final outcome would have been in doubt until the end.

We see breasts from Delphine Seyrig and breasts and buns from Olga Georges-Picot. The only criticism I have of this intriguing thriller is its length of well over two hours. Made in the UK, it has a European pace, and seemed slow in places. IMDb has it at 7.8, It is a far better movie than the Bruce Willis remake from 1997, which is sitting at 5.7. It received a BAFTA for best editing, and a host of nominations. This is a very good thriller, but with a known outcome, which detracts from the suspense. The proper score is C+. Genre fans will love it, but the pace and lack of suspense will not please those indifferent to the genre.

NOTE: because of a unique combination of circumstances with the Windows media player and some substantial bandwidth theft, we will have to do all of our movie files in zip format. Left click on the files as you normally would to view a picture. When you get a choice, click on "save", and put it on your hard drive in the directory of your choice. UnZIP and play from there.

I know this is not especially convenient, but it allows the film clips to continue. I can protect .zip files from hot-linking in the same way I can protect still images. For some reason, if I protect .avis and .wmvs from hot-linking, they will not play in the Windows media player, and I can't get a satisfactory work-around. Perhaps I will find a better solution, but for now this new policy allows you to continue getting the movie clips you want to see, which is much preferable to my abandoning the clips altogether.

Perhaps these tips will help if you have trouble with the codecs for these movies:

    Shiloh says:

FYI when I hypercam vids to make the file size smaller I use DivX MPEG-4 Fast-Motion for the video compressor, then I use virtualdub to compress the audio. The properties for the vids says the video codec:  DivX Decoder Filter & audio codec:  Morgan Stream Switcher which I'm not familiar with. When I compress the audio with virtualdub I use MPEG Layer-3.  A friend of mine told me about compressing the audio about (6) mos. ago. Like I said previously, only been capping for a year & a half & I'm no expert. Hopefully this info will help members with the proper codecs for my vids.

When I cap big brother's I use hypercam mostly & sdp & asfrecorder if the set up allows me. I stopped using camtasia cause the file sizes were always too big, could never figure out the process, over my head lol, plus it cost too much to buy in my opinion.

    A reader says:

You mentioned that some users were having trouble with the videos on your site. There is a tool designed to determine what codec is needed for a video. http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ Hope this is useful to you or your users.

    Scoop says:

I made the .wmv versions of each video. The codecs for these: Windows Video V8, Windows Audio 9. The upside of these is that you know the codecs, and they'll play in the Windows Media Player. The downside is that they are slightly larger, and slightly lower quality.

    'Caps and comments by Brainscan:

Jakarta (1988) is a type 2 undead movie.

Two points about type 1 undead movies:

    1) They involve vampires and mummies and zombies and ghouls... the kinds of things that lived, died and managed to make it back from the other side, usually to kill and sometimes to eat those of us still on this side.

    2) All but the originals suck... big time (Uncle Scoopy's First Law of the Undead).

And a couple of points about type 2 undead movies:

    1) They deal with people who are supposed to be dead but aren't.

    2) See number 2, above.

Jakarta is about a CIA guy in Indonesia who falls for a native lass, played by American of Chinese extraction, former Penthouse Pet, Suzee Pai (Miss Jan '81). For Asians in Hollywood, one size fits all. She dies... not. He falls apart, goes home, gets kidnapped and winds up back in Jakarta, where he spies.... Suzee, his beloved! And all is right with the world, the movie ends at 42 minute mark in a climax of pure happiness, bordering on joy.

    If only.

Instead the movie drags along before it sinks under the weight of its own deadly seriousness and complete mindlessness. One-half tugid, the other half vapid, the movie looks to Suzee Pai for rescue. Remember, this babe was a Penthouse Pet. Okay, not the days when they micturated on camera and stuck all sorts of appliances in places better filled with other, more natural objects. But still she got seriously nekkid in front of a camera. A couple of scenes with her doing likewise would have gone a long way to improving my mood.

    But no.

One sport humping scene behind a mosquito net produced two or three frames of her bum and an equal number of one mini-hootie. A second sport humping scene in a garden, sitting up, partially clothed, one mini visible for five frames. That's it. Or should I say, "That's it?!!"

And get this: so far as I can tell it was Suzee's only exposure before a moving camera. Gal was pretty, made about a movie a year for five or six years but was replaced by another Asian woman in generically Asian roles after 1988. Jakarta was her one starring role... and she coulda been a contender, an Asian Shannon Tweed, but it was not what she wanted. Que lastima.

About the caps... they are from a videotape. Couldn't find a DVD of this puppy. Don't think I'll be getting it if it ever comes out.
