Scoop's
sidebar: I just
realized that Linda
Lavin (TV's "Alice")
is in the movie.
She made no movies for
21 years but, under my
radar, is now working
again, playing elderly
character parts. (She
is 78)
As noir thrillers go,
this one is not so
bad. It is excessively
convoluted, not
especially credible
and sometimes
confusing, but it has
some good
performances, some
interesting characters
who work and play in a
richly drawn
underbelly of the Big
Apple, and my favorite
noir staple - a flawed
but honest anti-hero
who narrates in a sort
of world-weary street
poetry. I found it
interesting enough
that I ordered the
book and read it after
watching the movie,
which is probably my
personal equivalent of
a thumb up. (I was
more enthusiastic
about the book than
the film. It's a good
noir. The prose can be
quite eloquent.)
