"Traffik" (1989)
Traffik (1989) is a BBC mini-series from which the American Traffic was adapted. It is in six parts, and runs for 325 minutes. This structure is one of the things that made it better than last years Oscar nominee. It had way to much material to cover than someone could sit through and absorb in
a singe feature film. The series shows the heroine trade, from the poor Pakistani farmers who grow the poppies, to the processing labs, to the rich and powerful exporter, to the smugglers who get it into Germany, the rich German who imports then distributes it to all of Europe, The British
cabinet minister trying to attack the production, and his daughter who is addicted.
Some of the story elements survived in the American version, such as the drug Czar, his addict daughter, the wealthy drug lord, and his wife who is left holding the bag. In this case, however, the wife, a former Olympic swimmer, takes over the business, salvages the family wealth, and sees to
it that the witnesses against her husband disappear. Helen, played by Lindsay Duncan, is topless in a tanning machine in episode three, and has a lengthy full-frontal in episode five while being strip searched in an airport. Pakistan was replaced by Mexico, Germany was replaced by San Diego, and the production of narcotics was dropped altogether from the American film.
The series told a complete story, and not in the traditional way. For instance, we learn that the Pakistani farmers grow it because they would need twice the lad, and irrigation that they do not have, to earn what they can from poppies. Further, opium is no more illegal than vodka in Pakistan.
The mini-series goes into much more depth in the motivations of all of the players, and also has more of a final message than the US film. While traffic mainly said that the "War on Drugs" was a farce that wasn't working, Traffik contends that you will never end the problem by attacking
the production and distribution, because it is too profitable, and the poor farmers have no real alternatives. They say the only answer is to create a society where people don't need the escape of drugs, and that you have to stop the demand, or the supply will always be there.
IMDB readers, at the moment, have it at 9.0/10. I am sure this will moderate over time, but it is very well done, and well worth watching. I give it a B.

"Behind the Green Door" (1972)
Behind the Green Door (1972) is the story of a young woman, Marilyn Chambers, who is abducted and taken to a private sex club, where she is massaged and hypnotized into relaxing by a woman, then taken on stage, aroused by six women, ravaged by a large black man, then made to take on 4 men at the same time. The audience, aroused by the performance, has its own orgy. This is a hard core, but I did not include monster shots (genital close-ups) in the images. Marilyn looks every bit the 99 and 99/100% pure Ivory Snow girls in this film.
Behind the Green Door was the film that made the Mitchell Brothers millionaires, and shocked Ivory Snow out of their minds. The story of Behind the Green Door is an interesting one. A group of US GIs in Korea wrote a sexual fantasy, each subsequent author adding his own fantasies and improving the story. Behind The Green Door began to circulate as an underground story, especially among beatniks. In 1956, mainstream America was sort of introduced to its existence, but not really, when a song called "The Green Door" made Billboard #1 for three weeks. Those who knew about the book could barely contain their laughter around the people who loved the song, but had no idea what it was about. Behind the Green Door was not especially explicit by today's standards, with very few monster shots. Marilyn doesn't have a single line in the film, and has to act her ass off to get the story across. This new DVD is better than any other print I have seen of the film, but is still full of noise. The Mitchell Bros. played the hired kidnapers in the film. Marilyn Chambers mentions in an interview that she actually got into the sex, which is one
of the reasons the film worked so well.

Some info from Hugo...
Zeenat is an Indian Actress from the 70s who had become quite a sex symbol in the largest film industry in the world. She had half a billion men lusting after her! Here she is in an "unglamourized role" from "Satyam Shivam Sundaram" - a love story between a scarred woman and a guy who has a "phobia" of disfiguration. This film was rare in which she revealed quite a lot as per the Indian Standards with a few see-thrus scenes.

Just in case you haven't heard, mainstream "legitimate" British actress, Kerry Fox performs nonsimulated sex in the film, Intimacy with her co-star, Mark Rylance. Kerry is probably most familiar to American audiences for her work in the film, Shallow Grave (with Ewan McGreggor).
Actual sex has been seen fleetingly in foreign films from time to time (In the Realm of the Senses -- which by the way, destroyed the actors careers in Japan) but this is the first time that well known English language actors have participated in coitus on film.
Early in to the film she is seen clearly (in a very well lit situation) performing fellatio on her co-star...lucky bastard ;-)

There's also an excellent discussion of the shower scene in Carrie. The editor said people asked him why his name didn't appear on the movie. It was because his credit came on just as Nancy Allen walked toward the camera completely naked and nobody paid any attention to the credit.
