  • * Yellow asterisk: funny (maybe).

  • * White asterisk: expanded format.

  • * Blue asterisk: not mine.

  • No asterisk: it probably sucks.

Hitman

(2007)

Timothy Olyphant is an assassin, trained for the job since childhood. When he is ordered to hit the Russian president, his life gets complicated, not only by the fact that US intelligence, Interpol, and the KGB spooks are all after him, but also by the presence of Olga Kurylenko, who keeps trying to seduce him.

I watched this without knowing anything about it, and found it a watchable thriller. The film has plenty of violence and action, but also a liberal helping of character development. Some of the deaths are clever and creative, and Kurylenko shows everything in four scenes. Further, its origins as a video game were not obvious. I probably will not see it again, but don't regret the time I spent with it.

Critics were not kind, with the exception of Roger Ebert, but the film earned $92.2 against a budget of $24M, and IMDb readers score it 6.3.

The Bushwacker

1968

The Time Machine goes all the way back to the drive-in era for this nasty exploitation film, which features a future Playboy Playmate, Miss December of 1972, Mercy Rooney, who only made four movies and used a different name in each one. Her real name is Merci Montello, but by the time she did her Playboy shoot, she had acquired the Rooney surname legitimately by being married to Mickey Rooney Jr.

18-year-old Merci displays all of her charms as a "Babe in Bondage," well, at least until the ol' bushwhacker cuts off and eats her tit.

This is not a family movie.

Unfortunately, the quality of this DVD is not even up to VHS standards. It looks more like it did on the screens of the drive-ins and grindhouses where it played in the good old days, complete with scratches and pops. So think of this as a slice of history.

Caps and nine clips.
