"The King of Marvin Gardens" (1972)
The King of Marvin Gardens (1972) is a very strange film about two brothers. One, Jack Nicholson, has a radio show and lives with his Grandfather, and the other, Bruce Dern, is a two bit hustler living in Atlantic City. Ellen Burstyn and Julia Anne Robinson are both girlfriends to Dern. Dern calls Nicholson from jail, and invites him to visit and make plans for purchasing and developing a small Hawaiian island. Turns out none of Dern's plans have any basis in reality, and Nicholson tries to convince him. Meanwhile, Scatman Cruthers as the local gang leader is no longer willing to work with Dern, and, in fact, framed him and had him arrested.
Burstyn is an aging beauty queen, and is becoming jealous of younger Johnson. I suppose the ending would surprise some, but frankly, I never did "get" this film, and nothing that happened would have surprised me. The cast was uniformly excellent, and Burstyn gave an especially good performance. Maltin says 3 1/2 stars, and IMDB readers say 6.2/10. The DP, László Kovács did his usual outstanding job, and the art direction was very good. Both Burstyn and Johnson show breasts during a bedroom squirtgun fight seen through the doorway. Johnson also shows a breast running out of
the bathroom putting on a robe. I will give this a C+.

"Sweet Jane" (1998)
Sweet Jane (1998) is one of those Indies that might have found an audience if it had found a distributor that wasn't testicularly challenged. Jane (Samantha Mathis) is flat on the pavement as the film opens. Paramedics are trying to save her from her heroin overdose, which is not her first. She wakes up in a hospital, and is informed by her doctor that she is HIV positive. They want her to list all of her sexual contacts, and those she has shared needles with. She is having none of that, and leaves. A young teenaged boy followers her out.
The boy persists in following her, and expresses his disapproval when she works in a peep booth to buy a fix. She tries to get rid of him, but he is always showing up to save her from one self-induced problem after another, and she begins to appreciate him. As we get to know him, we find that his problems are far worse than hers, yet he has a better attitude. To say more would be a spoiler, and you may want to see this film. We see exactly what heroine addiction has done to Jane, and see her begin to take some part of her life back, largely due to the boy's concern.
This is a graphic film about two very tragic lives, but is somehow hopeful at the same time. Jane shows the side of one breast in bed with the boy. 39 IMDB readers say 7.2/10, and I would agree with that rating. The film played on one screen, for a total gross of $967.00, not even enough to pay
for the film stock. I hope it does well on video. I give this a B-. While it is a drugs suck film, which I normally do not like, this one appealed to me.

Dogma has been re-released on a Special Edition DVD, packed with features and 100 minutes of deleted scenes. Highlight must be a deleted scene with Kevin Smith (as not-so-Silent Bob) singing the theme song from Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids.
Essex Boys is a Brit gangster film. You chose Alex Kingston's nude scene as one of the twenty best of last year. Full-frontal, in good light, good actress, good looker.
