"The Good Mother"

The Good Mother (1988) is, for me, a near miss. A mother, Diane Keaton, is divorced and devoted to her daughter. She is fiercely independent, refusing financial help from her rich family. We find that she was sexually unfulfilled throughout her marriage, but is beginning to discover her libido. Enter Irish sculptor Liam Neeson, who transforms her into a true wanton hedonist, and becomes a part of the family. Life is bliss, until Keaton's ex shows up and informs her that he has filed a petition to revoke her custody, because Neeson has molested the daughter. We see the court case, and witness a logical but highly unsatisfactory resolution.

Ebert and others went to great lengths trying to explain why this film didn't work. There is certainly a powerful message about what can happen to you in the legal system, especially where minors are involved. There is a great love story in the second act between Keaton and Neeson. Keaton's family is developed well, and we see some of why she is who she is. I think there is an easy explanation as to why this film does work. It starts off well enough, with Keaton's favorite aunt (Tracy Griffith), herself a teenager, explaining that she is in the doghouse with the family because she is pregnant, and showing Keaton her breasts and tummy. Then, cut to the present day, and we have a plot that has Keaton going through a sexual awakening with Neeson, and, in doing so, gaining self esteem she has always lacked, and then everything falls apart do to a sexual incident. This center third of the film, which deals nearly entirely with sex, has absolutely no nudity. Perhaps Keaton had a no nudity clause. In that case, director Leonard Nemoy should have opted for a different actress in the role.

IMDb readers say 5.7 of 10, and critical response was dismal, with Ebert awarding one star. Even with the problems, the message affected me, both the first time I saw it years ago, and today on the new DVD. The Boston, Cambridge and Toronto locations are lovely, and the transfer is outstanding. Technically superb, and with enough message that it overcomes part of the plot problems, I have to give it a C.

    "Los Lobos de Washington"

Los Lobos de Washington (1999) is a made for TV Spanish thriller. Although the cast included real talent, the plot and budget gave them little or nothing to work with. The title, Washington Wolves, refers to a circus that keeps intersecting with the plot, but really has nothing to do with it. Alberto (Javier Bardem) and Miguel (Alberto San Juan) own a bar, but not a very successful one. They both need money. Alberto is divorced and alcoholic, and Miguel is planning on skipping town with Alberto's ex wife and son. They decide to scam their old rich friend Claudio (Josť Sancho). Claudio's wife, Vincenta N'Dongo, is also planning on stealing the money.

IMDB readers have it at 6.6 of 10. The only review link at IMDB is for the wrong film. For a real hoot, read the rant (comment) by an IMDB reader, who was also not impressed with this film. N'Dongo showed bush and buns in a well-lit scene, but didn't even come close to breast exposure. For me, the plot rambled aimlessly about, there were no characters to root for or against, and there was no real suspense. The entire film takes place in one night, and is dark beginning to end. D+.

Nora (2000) is an Irish biopic of the relationship between James Joyce (Ewan McGregor) and the love of his life, Nora Barnacle (Susan Lynch). In 1904, the two set out for a tour of Europe, despite the fact that she barely knew Joyce. The two settled in Trieste, where he got a job with Berlitz language school. Joyce, of course, was one of the greatest writers of the last century, and Nora was a simple country girl. Though she was never his intellectual equal, she was his muse and inspiration. The film chronicles their 10 years in Trieste, which were story, and during which they had two children. The biggest problem between them was his jealousy, but the fact that he was desperately trying to write and be published had trouble staying away from the bottle also caused many problems.

Lynch shows breasts in two sex scenes, with full frontal in the second one. Although a 4/3 ratio transfer, it is very nice quality, and some of the scenery is terrific. IMDB readers say 5.6 of 10. The critics liked it better, with a 70% positive at Rotten Tomatoes. Lynch's performance garnered her an IFTA (Irish equivalent of an Oscar) Best Actress. Despite the positives, the story never truly engaged me. It was too much like history, and not enough entertainment for my taste. C.

This is about the ten thousandth time I've looked at Monster's Ball but it's the first time I've had the official DVD in my hand. The bad news: the original version of the sex scene (seen at film festivals, pre-MPAA) is not in the deleted footage, nor has it been restored to the body of the film. It would be a shame if it were lost forever. The DVD has two commentary tracks but the other additional material is minimal: four very brief deleted scenes and a little bit of backstage chatter.

I believe Personal Best should be Joey Tribbiani's favorite movie. Naked lesbian athletes. 'nuff said.  Includes the only film footage in which you can see Mariel Hemingway's natural body.  Not available on DVD. Why the hell not? I'd buy one, Joey would buy one. VHS caps by Seňor Skin.

    • Patrice Donnelly (1, 2, 3, 4)
    • Mariel Hemingway (1, 2)

Susan Blakely is most famous for her nudity in the Ben Gazzara Capone film, but she also managed to get nekkid in Report to the Commissioner. Caps from Herr Skin.

I don't know what Fashionably L.A. is, but Monsieur Skin captured it, and it has naked chicks in it.

Jenya also had a brief nude scene in the TV show The Shield. Caps by Komrad Skin.

A new movie (2002) - Il Giovane Casanova, caps by Signore Skin.

    Other crap:

    • This site reminds me very much of the early days of the Fun House. Before we turned into a semi-mainstream r-rated version of People magazine, the original free site used to be determinedly P.I., edgy, sophomoric, and deliberately inflammatory. The original Uncle Scoopy was a character voice, a flame-baiting character voice who said controversial stuff just to get people talking about the page and coming back for more. The current Uncle avatar is simply, more or less, my real personality, lame and watered down though it may be. Anyway, this site has rated the 50 gayest things of all time. Like our old site, these guys are sophomoric and crude and offensive and as P.I. as possible. They can be juvenile. They can also be pretty fucking funny.
