Dead Heart (1998) is a gripping Australian film about the clash of cultures between aborigines and whites in a small settlement called Walla Walla. Two events polarize the "Blackfellas" and the "Whitefellas." First, the son of an elder and very traditional Blackfella hangs himself in jail, and second, the wife of an anthropologist, Angie Milliken, has an affair with a Blackfella who takes her to the sacred "place where we kill boys and make men."

The film attempts no easy answers, and asks the questions in a stark style that is like the open wounds of racial oppression. It is fairly well-known that the Australian government decided it was in the best interests of Aboriginal youth to round them up and raise them in Christian orphanages. The idea was to get the poor savages out of the bush, and give them the benefits of modern civilization. Some of the characters in this film had been through that. The film shows the richness of the indigenous culture, as well as the lack of understanding between the two groups which leaves everyone frustrated.

Angie Milliken shows pretty much everything in her lovemaking scene, which is intercut with two dogs going at it during a church service (an English teacher could go for weeks explaining all of that symbolism), including pubes. IMDB readers have it at 6.5/10. The only on-line reviews were Australia, where the film was well received. The dialects require careful listening, but the film is worth the effort. B-, with something for people who generally don't enjoy foreign fare.

Nudity reports from Cannes:

There is nudity in David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive". Laura Herring and Naomi Watts go topless in a lesbian scene.

There is no nudity in "Harvard Man", but Buffy has a steamy sex scene.

Neve Campbell keeps her clothes on in "Investigating Sex". Robin Tunney and Emily Bruni do topless scenes.

In "The Anniversary Party", Jennifer-Jason Leigh, Jennifer Beals, and Gwyneth Paltrow stay dressed. Parker Posey and Jane Adams do get topless.

Pretty good week for new releases. 

On the quality side. One great movie, one great genre picture, and a watchable noir with excellent production values.

On the nudity side, two of the top 20 nude scenes of last year. Mol and Connelly. 'nuff said.

No nudity in the period baseball film, Eight Men Out, John Sayles' accurate portrayal of the 1919 scandal in which some members of the Chicago White Sox threw the World Series to the Cincinnati Reds. A must-see for baseball fans.

Lots of nudity in the brilliant Requiem for a Dream. One of the best movies ever made. Brilliant, dazzling, intense, brilliantly edited, brilliantly performed. On the other hand, most people will not like it. Very serious, artistic movie told from the addict's POV. Perfect tonal adaptation of the book by the poet of smack, Hubert Selby Jr. Depressing and nerve-shattering. It is hard to watch it, and harder to recover after you watch it.

Forever Mine isn't a great a movie. If it had no nudity it would be a good-looking but cliched noir romance. But it has nudity beautiful nudity.

Oh yeah, these are really shitty caps because they are taken from a PAL to NTSC dub non-pro vidtape found in a tiny stall in a market in Mogadishu. All covered in dust and rat hairs. Katja's pretty cute and never ever covered her tits in this flick. And that's a good thing.

Why didn't I remove the widescreen matte shit? Because the caps are small enough as they are and it would have been even more work. Here would be Katja exercising her authority as jungle queen over Yolanda Gonzalez deep in the heart of the Congo region.

I read in a Jess Franco book that Katja went a little loopy later on and had to be replaced mid-stream during the shooting of another Franco flick. She got the "white jacket treatment." Like...say...Dana Plato, Katja was a child star in Germany and grew up with a perverse desire to get really nasty on film and in magazines. Katja, as far as I know, never did the XXX like Plato, but she did do the subsubgenre known as "hard soft porn" which is in no way to be confused with "soft hard porn."

You may have wondered why I have such an unhealthy interest in these sub-obscure sleazy trashy crap flicks from Europe. I've never shared this before online, but actually I was travelling about Europe in the early 80s, researching the history and folklore of ergot poisoning (with a great deal of hands-on field experiments) and found myself involved with some of the "hanger ons" of the eurosoftporn industry. I actually appeared in a couple of flicks... including "Kilimanjaro." Here I am in a short but touching scene. I meet and make googley eyes with Katja deep in the bush. Handsome devil, wasn't I?

Here are some caps of Yolanda Gonzalez's nipples. And fine nipples they are. For some reason the widescreen shit was gone from this scene. Mysterious!
