Thursday

The middle of the week is getting kinda slow these days! It seems like everything we want to see is crowded into Friday night and Sunday night. Today's page has a gig and half of videos, but nothing very newsworthy.

  • * Yellow asterisk: funny (maybe).

  • * White asterisk: expanded format.

  • * Blue asterisk: not mine.

  • No asterisk: it probably sucks.

OTHER CRAP:

PICS/COLLAGES

Bo Derek in Woman of Desire, a bad film even by the standards of Bo Derek movies. This was the last film in which the sole point of the project was to show Bo naked.

After her blazing-hot ascension to stardom in 10, her career consisted solely of great nude scenes in very bad movies. Here are the movies she made in the prime of her physical condition, ages 21-37.

(5.90) - 10 (1979)
(5.20) - A Change of Seasons (1980)
(5.10) - Orca (1977)
(4.00) - Woman of Desire (1994)
(3.12) - Tarzan, the Ape Man (1981)
(2.99) - Fantasies (1981/I)
(2.62) - Bolero (1984)
(1.95) - Ghosts Can't Do It (1989)

Now that I look at it, Woman of Desire is the 4th best out of those 8, which is scary!

She did make one fairly good comedy, Tommy Boy, in the next phase of her career, so the best movie of her career is either that or 10. Not much to show for 30+ years of acting.

According to IMDb, she's in a 2012 movie called Highland Park, an indie starring Parker Posey. (I guess that's redundant. All indie movies star Parker Posey.) That would be her first movie role in eight years. Old guys, hold on to your seats for the next sentence. Bo Derek, our fresh young lust object, the symbol of the younger women we could no longer attract, is now 55 years old.

Memento mori.

Jean Simmons in Spartacus. Someday I would love for somebody to come up with the original footage from this scene, before the branches were clumsily drawn in to follow her chest whichever way she turned.

Here's a fascinating tidbit about the notorious Tony Curtis / Lawrence Olivier scene which was cut from the original theatrical version of Spartacus. If you have watched that scene, did you know that you were listening not to Olivier, but to Dr. Hannibal Lecter?

"One of the most famous scenes did not make the cut, however. This was the bath scene where the Roman general Crassus (Laurence Olivier) asks his new slave Antoninus (Tony Curtis) if he prefers oysters or snails, calling it a question of taste rather than morality, and declaring that he eats both oysters and snails. The barely-concealed reference to same-sex coupling was cut out of the original film, and only later restored. The audio track for this scene had been lost. Curtis was still around to re-record his lines, but Olivier was dead by then. So Anthony Hopkins, once Olivier’s understudy and a fearsomely good mimic, recorded the dialogue."
