(1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28) RDO, the old master, returns with a gazillion caps from Vampyros Lesbos. The first 10 are unidentified. 11-12 are Soledad Miranda. 13-14 are Eva Stroemberg. 15-16 are Miranda again, 17-21 are Stroemberg. 22 is Miranda. 23 is Stroemberg. 24-25 are Miranda. 26-28 are Heidrun Kussin. Vampyros Lesbos is a Jess Franco movie, often considered the best of Franco's works (this is not exactly the same level as being the best of Spielberg's works), and is considered to be one of the masterpieces of the Softcore Eurohorror genre. Be advised, though, that this genre is not very compelling to those who are not hooked on it. Does the term "high camp" mean anything to you? The term was invented to apply to stuff like this. Like Rollin's movies, this one is best watched in fast forward, where you can see all the visuals in a shorter time. Don't worry, you won't miss any plot points, and you can always slow down for nudity and sex. This film is mostly pictures and odd music, very little spoken dialogue, and will irritate the hell out of you with long visual stretches that don't advance the film in any way (like people walking in silence). The movie is really a wonderful time machine that allows you to travel back into the 1970 time period and see the inherent silliness of the culture. The hair, the clothes, the music. Hilarious! My wedding was the same year, and I can't bear to look at the pictures. (It looks like a convention of Elvis Impersonators.) You have to slow it down once in a while to listen to the score, which is one of those things so bad it's good. If I remember right, Franco wrote the score as well. He is the European Mac Davis. He can't do anything well, but by god he can do anything.

Schmutzfink chose German beauties as his topic for this week. These come from either films or the famous continuing TV series. Considering the size and sophistication of the country, Germany doesn't really contribute many movies to the international market. I suppose it's only a matter of time- "Lola rennt" was an outstanding and unique movie, currently ranked near the top 50 of all time by IMDb viewers, but unfairly ignored by the Oscars. On the other hand, Deutschland has some serious deutschmarks pumped into TV production. Many of the long-running series are of a quality equal to the best US shows like ER or Hill Street Blues, often featuring the top stars in the country, with the added bonus of nudity.

    "Susan's Plan", from Johnny Web

    What the hell happened to John Landis, legendary director of The Blues Brothers and Animal House? This comedy is really messed up.

    First of all, it centers around cold-blooded murder for profit, and we follow the story of the murderers. The victim is barely seen, but we are led to believe that he deserved to die. Huh? Killing a guy we don't know isn't exactly as involving as getting harmless revenge on Dean Wormer. This is creepy. Second, the comedy leads aren't Tim Matheson and John Belushi. Nope, they are those two well-known comic cut-ups Billy Zane and Nastassia Kinski. Man, the laughs never stop comin' when those two are around. That Zane, what a jokester! WTF? I guess Manson was in prison and they wouldn't let him out, so they had to get Zane. Third, the level of humor involves too many people hiding in a closet and one of them farts. And you thought the Algonquin round table represented the apex of sophisticated wit! Fourth, when the movie ended, I thought they were kidding. The credits started rolling and I reversed to see if I missed anything. Then I forwarded to see if there was more after the credits. Nothing. It just seems to end in the middle of the movie. Fifth, all the main characters that we have been following (one minor exception) end up either brutally slain by gunfire or in prison awaiting the chair. There's some wacky comic genius at work, eh? Those people that don't get killed for real get killed in enactments of dream scenes.

    There are a lot of nude and sex scenes. They are in crappy light, shot from silly angles, or pass by too fast, but there are a lot of them. Kinski's scene is so dark you can't see a thing. Boyle's scene with the doctor (#1 and #2) is about 10 frames in dark light, over before you know it. Boyle's bath scene (#5) is entirely in motion, so she's out of focus in the still captures. Thankfully, Boyle's scene with the victim does show her off quite well. I don't think she's too thin, as so many people say. She's just a hardbody. Venuti's scene is OK, and her chest looks great, but I don't know who she is.

    "Permanent Midnight", from Tuna

    Dark, autobiographical, story about a hollywood screenwriter fighting the dark side of his nature and the temptations of fame and success. Since we have Billy Zane in a comedy today, we therefore have Ben Stiller in a drama to fulfill equal time requirements. Perhaps if they had reversed roles, both movies might have improved. A disappointment because the Region 1 DVD is missing some excellent nudity seen in Australia and perhaps elsewhere. (Aussie did those caps some weeks ago)

    "Revenge", from Tuna

    Another Costner flick, based on a pulp novel by Jim Harrison. Big Kev seduces the wife of a rich, powerful, and very vengeful guy who considers him to be a good friend. And then the two guys do that bull kangaroo thing and crash their chests together over the woman, who is apparently really not important to either, except as a prize. Anthony Quinn plays Zorba the Billionaire.
