"Jane and the Lost City" (1987)

Jane and the Lost City (1987) is one of those films I found in a video store years ago, thoroughly enjoyed, and assumed that the whole world knew about it. It was released on region 1 DVD this week, and I eagerly awaited it. To me surprise, there are no reviews on line, and only 21 voters at IMDB have it at 5.8/10. Jane was a comic strip in the London Daily Mirror during WW II. Jane and the Colonel were British intelligence/spies, doing battle with their Nazi counterparts. Jane had the habit of getting her dress torn off by men, women, animals and even inanimate objects. There is no real exposure, but, through much of the film, Kirsten Hughes, as Jane, reminds me of 40s and 50s pin-ups.

In Jane and the Lost City, Jane and the Colonel are off to Africa, find the "Lost City," persuade the ruling tribe of Amazons to give them the treasure of huge diamonds to finance the war effort, and get revenge on the Nazi spies led by Lola Pagoda (Maud Adams). They meet handsome Jungle Jack (Sam Jones) shortly after arriving, and he helps them with the quest, and falls madly and mutually in love with Jane. Both Jane and the Colonel are incredibly inept, but as lucky as they are bungling. The colonel's butler, Tombs, is the brightest of the lot.

I find this film a total delight, and the DVD transfer is gorgeous. I do wish they had included some special features -- especially a history of the comic strip, but it is still worth seeing. I would imagine the critical average would be 2 1/2 stars, as it is a quirky comic comedy, but I see it as 3 to 3 1/2 stars.

    I took a look at "The Crew". Pictures in yesterday's edition.

    Who would have guessed it? A undistributed romantic comedy with Tim Daly, and it's a darned good movie. Here's Seven Girlfriends, Clever script, some laughs, and cuts close to the bone in a couple cases. Daly is much more talented than I gave him credit for, but the star of the show is Melora Hardin, who seems like the most likeable of the seven girlfriends, and is a helluva singer. Daly himself sings quietly and passably in a brief duet.

    The dated Fort Apache, the Bronx is one of the films that causes us some problems in the widescreen version. The film was filmed 35 mm, soft matted to 1.85:1. The VHS version was not pan-and-scan, but open matte. What all that means, in simplest terms, is that the VHS version is the entire negative, and the widescreen edition on the DVD is simply the VHS version with black bars on the top and bottom. It is no wider than the VHS version, but it is much reduced on the top and bottom. Normally, this is a "who cares" issue, because the director meant us to see the widescreen version, and composed his shots accordingly. But in this case, we lost a lot of Rachel Ticotin - almost all the nudity. What was a topless scene on the VHS tape is now barely a peek at a nipple. Sigh

    I saw these in the Sun today and thought I should send them in. Both are more well known in the UK, but what the hey!

    Firstly there's Jenny Frost. She's just joined UK band Atomic Kitten. She used to be in the band Precious, one of our many failed European Song Contest entrants.

    Soon after the pictures were taken Jenny broke into the pop world with the group Precious, who represented Britain in the 1999 Eurovision Song Contest.

    Jenny, 23, joined Natasha Hamilton and Liz McClarnon in the Kittens in January when Kerry Katona quit to have Westlife star Bryan McFadden's baby.

    An excellent collection of 'caps from the "horror" movie "Embrace the Darkness". Basically it's a soft core movie with something of an actual story. Every angle but the gyno-cam, and the sex scenes don't look like the usual really fake stuff. Thanks to Scanman
