"Mother Night" (1996)

Mother Night (1996) is one of the better attempts at bringing a Kurt Vonnegut Jr. novel to the screen. It was a good one to pick, as it is not as full of symbolism as most of Vonnegut's work. Nick Nolte gives a superb performance as Howard W. Campbell Jr. Howard was born in the USA, but moved to Germany when his father was transferred there. It was in Germany that he grew up, and, by the time his father was recalled to the US, he was a successful playwright in the German language, and married to the most famous actress of the time. For these reasons, he chose to stay in Germany.

He was approached by an American Intelligence officer, and recruited as an Allied spy. He made daily propaganda broadcasts, which contained a code in the coughs and pauses, and passed intel info to the allies. In the process, he became the darling of the Nazis because of his nightly broadcasts. During the Russian invasion of Germany, his wife was killed while entertaining the troops. His wife had been his entire life. As the war ended, he found himself arrested as a war criminal, but the agent who recruited him helped him escape to New York. Without his wife, he was a living dead man. He finally befriended a neighbor, but his past was torturing him. Was he a hero or a war criminal? The US would not confirm his role as spy, as it was a trick they might want to use again.

Up to this point, nearly everyone agrees that it was a good film. Then, some Neo-Nazis discover him, and he becomes their hero. The Nazis are a pretty fat/old/ugly/inept/stupid bunch, which ruined it for most of the critics. I thought the humor of these "Arian supermen" contrasted very well with Campbell, who had been there and done that. The film opens with Nolte being shown into a cell in Heifa. He is given a Nazi typewriter and three weeks to type his memoirs before his war crimes trial. The story is told in a series of flashbacks. It becomes clear as the film progresses that he is a far harsher judge of his actions than any tribunal, and the surprise ending is not that surprising.

The critics pretty much agree at 2.5. IMDB and Apollo readers like it a little more at 7.7/10 and 88% respectively. The film is beautifully shot, and in an interesting switch, the present day is shot in B & W, and the past is in glorious living color, which helps bring home the point that the Nazi heyday was the prime of Howard W. Campbell. The exposure comes from Sheryl Lee during a love scene with Nolte near the beginning, when she bares her breasts. Based on the strong performances, the weighty themes, the good photography and art direction, and the fact that the film gave me much to think about, I award a B.

14 new collages of Elodie Bouchez today, rounding out her screen life pretty well. The following table shows her career in chronological order. All the hyperlinks are active. If I had them, I used new pictures to represent a film. If not, I used one or more older ones from the Encyclopedia. In fact, there are about 15 more in the Encyclopedia that I did not use, if you care for even more depth. The additional Encyclopedia pictures, however, do not represent additional films, just more coverage per film.

I've been collecting these a few at a time for several weeks, and decided it's time to clean out the "Scoopy" folder. The caps of Elke are from a DVD, but it must have been made from a very bad print. You know, it's odd. I remember 1962 very well. I remember black & white TV. But as far back as I can remember, black & white movies seemed REALLY OLD.

Next week I'll have part 1 of "Female Vampire". Whatever acting abilities Lina Romay may or may not have displayed, her display was at least not painful to the eyes.

  • Elke Sommer, topless in scenes from "Daniella by Night" (1961) (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
  • Other topless dancers in "Daniella by Night" (1, 2, 3, 4)
  • Judith Godreche, full frontal nudity from 1990's "La Désenchantée" (1, 2)
  • Emmanuelle Béart, full frontal and rear nudity in scenes from "Manon of the Spring".
    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
  • Sean Young, breast exposure and almost full frontal nudity in, "No Way Out" (1987).
    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
  • Snowblind
    Nina Hartley and Shauny Sexton
    (1, 2)

A whole mess of semi-hardcore 'caps from "Bubbles Galore".

First, here are Nina and Shauny in a lesbo scene. The nudity includes: robo-hooters, bare bum, and images from the gyno-cam.

Nina Hartley Nina by herself. Mostly boobs and bum.

Shauny Sexton Shauny by herself. A good example of the 3 B's. Boobs, bum, and bondage.

Annie Sprinkle Breasts and some frontal (partially obscured by her hands-but in the good way).

Britanee Bond and Raven Anyone order the 4 pack of robo-hooters?

    Rosalba Martinni Topless only.
    and ...
    Lola Pagnani
    (1, 2, 3, 4)

Excellent topless, and rear nudes of the Italian movie babe, by PicCap.

    Graciela Borges
    (1 2)

    Andrea Del Boca

All we know for sure is that these two ladies will have to worry about getting rid of a Jersey accent. That and the fact that they are not wearing any clothing.

Vidcaps from the Argentinean movie "Funes, un gran amor".

    Helen Hunt
    (1, 2)

Far off topless scenes from "Dr. T and the Women". Thanks to Deafbear.

    Louise Tréamont
    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8)

Plenty of fabulous, breast, rear and frontal nudity in scenes from her only IMDb film credit, "Liaisons à domicile". Even if obscure, one-timers from France aren't your thing, I still say have a look. She's a beauty.

Sandrine Bonnaire A very high reading on my Pokometer (the device I use to measure Pokiosity). Looks like about a 9.0. It's a bit rare to see pokies in bad lighting, so I guess that explains the high readings. Thanks to UC99 for these scenes from 1988's "Quelques jours avec moi".

Elisa Servier Topless in the tub. Also from ""Quelques jours avec moi", by UC99.

Jo Guest If only the dudes at the Food Network would take a few notes from Watty and the show "Hot Sauce"!

    Here's a recipe I suggest:
    Ingredients:
    No Emeril
    No Florence Henderson
No women that look like the Dough Boy

    One or more Hot models
    One apron per model

  • Begin cooking show by having a recipe that will involve either a lot of sweating and/or many small food stuffs that can be used for playful food fights.
  • Apply the apron to the model. Be sure to remove any clothing other that the apron. Be sure that the apron is not too snug. For best results the apron should fit loosely, allowing the model to "breathe" while cooking.
  • Send her out in front of the camera and begin cooking for 25 minutes.

    This should increase ratings overnight.

  • Heidi Klum update:
RE: yesterday's funhouse...Heidi Klum does show some pubic hair in the movie Blow Dry, but it's a prosthetic device. She gave an interview recently where she admitted it's a fake patch, so we shouldn't get all worked up. I must admit, however, I was very disappointed to hear this as I consider her my "#1" right now, and to see her lower half would have been a treat indeed.
