"The Warriors" (1979)
The Warriors (1979) has a simple plot. A gang from Coney Island, the Warriors, travels to the far end of the Bronx for a meeting of all the major gangs in the 5 boroughs. The speaker, Cyrus, is on a roll, advocating that all of the gangs join forces to drive out the mob and the police, then take
over the city, when someone shoots him, and manages to sift the blame to the Warriors. The Warriors now have to get home with every gang in New York after them.What could have been a rather dull gang exploitation film is actually very well made, and features great photography, wonderful costumes
for the gangs, and lots of action. There is not much in the way of exposure, but Deborah Van Valkenburgh in her first role wears a very tight thin top, and pokes through it the entire film.
Maltin gives this 3 stars, Apollo says 77, but Apollo readers have it at 90. IMDB readers say 6.9/10, which is high for an exploitation film, but consistent with action film ratings at IMDB. I found myself drawn in to the story. It held my interest start to finish, and actually made me care a
little bit about these street gang members. I give it a B-.

I'm still plowing through all the new theatrical and DVD releases. Hope to finish them all in tomorrow's edition. For today:
I looked at The Contender. Fun movie. Slick old-fashioned political potboiler cum soap opera, updated for the milennium. Basically a cartoon, but a very entertaining
cartoon.
I looked at Pollock, which still hasn't opened in most cities, despite two Oscar nominations. A project of complete integrity, a labor of love for Ed Harris, who commissioned the script, then produced, directed, and starred. Would have made an excellent two-part Masterpiece theater. It is a good movie, but they decided to make it an arthouse flick about the nature of the artistic process rtather than a mass audience effort. Sorry, guys, Connelly didn't flash the goodies. Harden
didn't either, but at least her two scenes are worth looking at.
Finally, I thought this never-before-seen topless picture of Claudia Schiffer was cute.
