Report from Charlie
The French Cinema Nudity Site is updated. In addition,
Charlie sent this report,
"Here is As I know you are a fan and I did not see the
story on your site, here are some scans from Arielle Dombasle. The story
behind them is that, inspired by Dita Von Teese, she decided to set up a
strip show. So, she is now the main attraction at Paris's famous cabaret,
Crazy Horse! But, I am sure it shall not surprise you that much, shall it?"
Scoop's note: I didn't know about this, but I'll tell you what. There are some
other 50-year-old women who look OK with their clothes off, but there is
only one in the world that looks good enough to get me to pay to see her
show, and that is Arielle!
She looks incredible. (She turns 54 in April.)

* Yellow asterisk: funny (maybe).
* White asterisk: expanded format.
* Blue asterisk: not mine.
No asterisk: it probably sucks.

Sue
Sue lives in Manhattan, but is out of work, and three months behind in her
rent. The landlord is about out of patience, especially since her rent is
grandfathered at a low rate. We see her at the occasional job interview, where
she is pathetically eager, and even though she has a masters degree in
psychology from Columbia and many years experience in a law office, seems to
be nearly unemployable. As she says, she only communicates using sex, and, as
a very lonely person, tries to communicate a lot. She picks up a freelance
writer, Matthew Powers, in a restaurant, and he seems to be her salvation
until he takes a job assignment out of the country. By then there is no hope
for her.
This is a searing 1997 portrait of a disenfranchised woman whose mother is
deep in the clutches of Alzheimer's, and is too demoralized to recover even
when help is offered. I found it an amazing film and far better than the plot
summary makes it sound. Sue is a brilliant film due to the performance by Anna
Levine Thomson in the title role. She manages to turn a slutty looser into a
sympathetic character, involving the audience in her life. Rather than being
repulsed, you want to reach out to her. Levine, best known for Unforgiven, The
Crow and Bad Boys, became such a sensation in France due to this film that she
moved there to pursue her career, and made several more films with the same
director.
I screened a German DVD. It is also available in other countries, but made
no impact here at all, even though it is made in the US and is English. It
played in one theater and was never released on DVD. It is for this reason
that I can only award a C+, but if you are open to non-Hollywood non-formula
films, see this one.
IMDb says 7.1.

Bienvenido a casa
Samuel (Alejo Sauras), an aspiring photographer, makes the broad
leap from his rural village in the Spanish countryside, where he lives
under the thumb of his domineering mother, to the wonderland of urban
Madrid. He moves in with his girlfriend, Eva (Pilar López de Ayala), and
accepts a position as the resident photojournalist for a local culture
magazine. Samuel teams up with the magazine's reporter, Sandra (Ariadna
Gil), for an investigative story on a murder related to human
trafficking. Meanwhile, Samuel begins to grapple privately with problems
in his marital life-specifically, how to preserve the love, romance, and
devotion he feels for Eva.
Samuel's watchful mother (Concha Velasco)
cautions him not to repeat the same mistakes that she once made. But the
past comes back to haunt Samuel in the guise of a fateful
encounter with a childhood friend, Nieves (Juana Acosta). Then,
suddenly, Eva announces her pregnancy.
Although Juana Acosta was good as Nieves, a girl that ends up working
in a strip club after moving to Madrid with the dream of making it as an
actress, this comedy from Spanish director
David Trueba was not very good in general. It got lost in too many cameos from
known Spanish actors.

Camp Wild
Isild Le Besco is a French actress I really enjoy watching, and I
think the main reason is that, while she is attractive enough and has a
killer body, she isn't the typical perfect, painted actress that
Hollywood loves. She looks like a real person, flaws and all. She also
appears to be a good actor, although it's tough to judge when you don't
understand the language the actor speaks; sub-titles make it hard to
really know the quality of the performance. Unfortunately, the cast
didn't have much to work with in this 2005 drama that is uninspired and
predictable.
Blaise is a forty-something man who is married with a young child. He
is brought into a vacation campground to be the sailing instructor. He's
been out of work, so he needs the job badly. Camille (Isild Le Besco),
who is camping with her parents, is at first repelled, and then
attracted to the strange looking man. As she begins to shower affection
on Blaise, he is warned off by the camp manager, and by other campers
including the girl's father. He tries to discourage the girl, but she is
relentless. When Blaise's wife and child show up at the campground,
things get even more tense.
You can see where this is going long before it gets to the ending.
Not a bad story, but certainly not unique.

Elizabeth Montgomery (Samantha from Bewitched) in The Legend of Lizzie
Borden. It's modest, but she's really naked. Kissing on the Mouth (2005).
Official blurb: "Raw. Honest. Naked. "Kissing on the Mouth" is
post-college life in close-up. Ellen is sleeping with her ex-boyfriend
while trying to ignore the fact that he's looking for more than just sex.
Her roommate, Patrick, isn't helping matters with his secretive and
jealous behavior. The small cast served as the only crew on this intimate
and humorous film featuring real interviews with recent college graduates
and a documentary approach to the graphic sex and conversations.

Pat's comments in yellow...
TMZ.com obtained an affidavit written in December by Anna Nicole Smith's
former nanny, who claims Smith ordered her to underfeed her baby daughter
Dannielynn, because she 'was obsessed with making sure that her baby was
'sexy.'"
* Nobody thinks that weighing seven pounds is sexy,
except maybe Nicole Ritchie.
Two researchers at UC-Santa Barbara discovered that people have
naturally evolved an instinct that makes them feel disgusted by the thought of
kissing their sister. They say all it takes is spending time in the same home
and seeing your mother care for your sibling to trigger this subconscious
anti-incest reaction that helps you identify your kin in adulthood and avoid
sexual contact with them. This contradicts Freud, who thought everyone had
natural impulses to incest and only societal taboos prevented them from acting
on it.
* Although, to be fair, Freud had a smokin' hot sister.
* Obviously, their test subjects didn't include Angelina Jolie's brother
A member of the European Parliament wants to make an "Unfair Commercial
Practices" regulation that would require London's Marks & Spencer department
store to remove its dressing room mirrors. This came after his wife and
daughter claimed the mirrors reflected a distorted image that made women look
slimmer than they are. An M&S spokesman denied the charge, saying their
changing rooms contain "perfectly normal, bog-standard, run-of-the-mill
mirrors." Indeed, the Daily Telegraph newspaper tested them and not only
found no slimming effect, they found that the bright lights on them emphasized
wrinkles and bags under the eyes.
* If that store had mirrors that made women look
slimmer, they'd stop selling clothes and start selling mirrors.
A 79-year-old man in Karlskrona, Sweden, was charged with reckless driving
after he backed into traffic coming the opposite direction, then crashed into
a traffic light. But he has a unique excuse. He lives in a small town in the
north and hadn't driven in city traffic in over 40 years. So he was thrown by
the discovery that Sweden had switched from driving on the left side of the
road to the right side...in 1967.
* Also, his driver's license had expired...in 1964.
For Valentine's, She Wants A Heart...Anybody's Will Do - Tuesday in Tempe,
Arizona, police arrested Tiffany Sutton on suspicion of assault. A man from
her building claims the two hooked up, consumed alcohol and drugs, then had
sex. She wanted to tie him up, and he consented, but he said he began to
panic when she started slashing him with a knife and telling him she likes to
drink blood. Police said he finally freed himself and ran away, with Sutton
chasing after him with a pick-ax. He was taken to a hospital. Sutton told
police the entire encounter was consensual.
* In fact, he ASKED her to chase him down the street
with a pick-ax!
