Beverly Hills, 90210 was a teen drama series based on twins Brandon and Brenda Walsh, played by Jason Priestly and Shannen Doherty. It had a slow start but ended up running for 10 seasons and 293 episodes in the 1990’s. There was no nudity but some lovely looking women.

A Clock Work Blue

Three of my new projects are the work of one Eric Jeffrey Haims, the director of only five films, three of which he also produced in the years 1971 to 1973.  

A Clock Work Blue is his attempt to be Mel Brooks if Mel's comedic sense were that of a pimple-faced 15-year-old guy from the nearby trailer park.  The movie imagines what might happen if someone traveled across time to visit Betsy Ross and Marie Antoinette, Anne Boleyn, Cleopatra and Helen of Troy.  By some miracle, these women get all sorts of nekkid in his presence and they speak perfect 20th century American English.  The humor is so thin as to be a molecular monolayer and the exposure is disappointing because the camera is either placed a country mile away from the action or about five inches from the surface of a gal.  We got your long shots and we got your extreme closeups, but very little of the middle ground that makes for ideal image capture. 

I wish the producer/director Haims had figured out what he wanted here.  If it was comedy, he might have gotten a writer who was... I don't know... funny?  Amusing?  Clever?  But no.  And if it was exploitation - which I am guessing was his aim, because let's recap: he hired a half-dozen pornstars to appear in the movie - he might have gotten a cinematographer and an editor or (here's an idea) some directorial skills for himself to film the nekkid gals all proper-like, ya know?  That would have been nice but it was not to be. 

The women in Clock Work include several who moved seamlessly from porn to softcore.  They are:

Grindhouse veteran, Tracy Handfuss, has a large part but shows nothing but copious upskirtery.

Mady, who spent some time in 1970s TV, gets real close to revealing some naughty bits but manages to keep herself covered.

The Scarecrow

The Scarecrow is a 1982 mystery thriller.

In the small town of Klynham, a young girl is brutally murdered, sending shockwaves through the town. Teen boy Ned (Jono Smith) and his friend Les (Daniel McLaren) steal some hens to get their own eggs so they can get 'rich'. Ned's sister Prudence (Tracy Mann) is burgeoning into a young woman and is starting to get the attention of the local boys. Meanwhile a drifter Hubert (legendary character actor John Carradine) arrives in town and impresses some drunken locals with some tricks while scaring half the town with his intimidating physique. Ned and Les are intimidated by a local gang of boys who will let them join if they can deliver Prudence to them. All the while the bodies start piling up and the town goes into a panic. Then the murders strikes close to home when Prudence's friend Angela goes missing.

Interesting mystery movie that's not really all that much of the mystery but it builds the tension in the town quite nicely before it ends in a bit of weird way. The movie has that typical feel of New Zealand movies at the time where there's a horrible darkness under the surface of a fairly normal small town. And while she's not the main character in the movie, Tracy Mann impresses as someone trying to break out of the chains of being a young woman in a small town and then finding herself the target of the killer.

Tuna Retrospective



Many of you remember Tuna, who was the most prolific contributor of images, and the second-most prolific wordsmith during the first 15 years of the Fun House. For those who are not acquainted with him, it's high time you met. Although he passed away before the Blu-Ray age, his DVD captures and collages still hold up as some of the best work that has ever appeared on the internet. Enjoy!
